Description

Demand for electricity and transmission capacity is climbing quickly as the energy transition advances. HVDC links will carry power from remote and offshore renewable sites, tie energy markets together, and strengthen AC networks. Converter stations depend on advanced control and protection to run power electronic valves and related equipment safely, efficiently and reliably.

The Grid Systems Integration business is hiring a senior engineer for the HVDC NPI team. You will act as a trusted consultant and technical authority, helping shape and apply advanced HVDC control and protection solutions, improve design practice, guide complex technical work, and steer how the technology develops over the long term.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a recognised technical authority on HVDC control and protection, advising senior leaders and consulting engineers.
  • Sign off designs and review execution plans, helping engineering teams deliver sound, high-quality solutions.
  • Help maintain the HVDC control and protection algorithms technology roadmap and identify where the technology can advance.
  • Lead standardisation work inside and outside the company, including representing it at IEC, CIGRE and similar bodies.
  • Assess patents and help protect the company's innovations and intellectual property.
  • Direct R&D programmes from concept through to industrialisation, and encourage collaboration with the company's other businesses.
  • Support tendering and delivery, quality reviews, and root cause analysis of major technical problems.
  • Coach engineers, promote good engineering practice, and support technical governance across the organisation.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or PhD in electrical and electronic engineering or a related field centred on control system development, ideally with a power systems focus.
  • Experience leading technical teams to deliver high-quality output on business deadlines.
  • Experience writing high-quality requirements, design and test specifications.
  • Strong experience building control and protection solutions with model-based design in MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Experience running EMT studies on power systems.
  • Strong grasp of HVDC control and protection, especially for high-availability, real-time, flexible control systems.
  • Deep knowledge of control algorithm principles, implementation and integration, control software architecture, interaction studies, grid forming control, and control system verification and validation.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for work.
  • Preferred: experience working with multi-terminal HVDC systems.
  • Preferred: experience with PSCAD simulation software.
  • Preferred: expertise in HVDC control and protection solutions.

Conditions

Relocation assistance is not provided.

You do not need to meet every requirement to apply; strong alignment with several key aspects of the role is encouraged.

The company is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer.

Benefits

  • Work on control and protection technology that underpins future transmission infrastructure, with scope to shape technical direction and lead high-impact engineering.
  • Career support from your people leader and trusted mentors, with the option to transfer between teams and functions.
  • Fair pay, performance-based rewards, and wellbeing programmes for you and your family.
  • A career path designed to fit a healthy work-life balance.
