Description

The company is a global healthcare technology business with about 95,000 staff in more than 150 countries, and its products are used by over 72 million patients a year.

You would join the Physiological Sensing R&D team, which takes monitoring technology from first development through ongoing improvement and clinical validation. Its work covers anesthesia and depth of sedation monitoring, respiratory monitoring, pulse oximetry, regional oximetry, and predictive algorithms with clinical decision support. The team focuses on non-invasive, real-time sensing that gives clinicians usable information in surgery, critical care, and other high-risk settings.

As a Senior Embedded Software Engineer, you will build software for medical products at every stage, from early exploration and technical evaluation through feature work and product upgrades to supporting products already in use. You will coordinate with software, hardware, systems, test, and quality colleagues in several countries, so clear communication matters.

Responsibilities

  • Write and maintain embedded code in C and C++.
  • Program microcontrollers and the hardware interfaces connected to them.
  • Create proofs of concept to test new ideas.
  • Build software for bare-metal targets and for real-time operating system (RTOS) applications.
  • Help shape embedded software architecture and modular design.
  • Take part in code reviews, testing, and technical design discussions.
  • Find and fix software problems.
  • Produce and maintain software requirements, designs, and other development documents, and help with software risk analysis.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, electronics, embedded systems, or a related field plus at least 4 years of relevant experience, or a master's degree plus at least 2 years.
  • Hands-on programming skill in embedded C and C++.
  • Embedded work on microcontrollers in bare-metal and RTOS environments, for example on STM32 with ThreadX or an equivalent RTOS.
  • Hardware integration and driver development for interfaces and peripherals such as UART, SPI, I²C, ADC, PWM, and USB.
  • Tuning embedded software for performance, memory use, reliability, and real-time behaviour.
  • Designing for testability, including unit tests with mocks, integration tests, and testing on target hardware.
  • Static analysis, code review, and secure coding practice.
  • Source control and configuration management with Git or similar tools, plus some exposure to CI/CD.
  • Knowledge of software development processes used in regulated environments.
  • Writing and maintaining requirements, designs, test records, and traceability from requirements through implementation to verification evidence.
  • Staying hands-on in coding while giving technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers.
  • Preferred: setting up and maintaining CI/CD pipelines for embedded software.
  • Preferred: experience with medical device software and familiarity with IEC 62304.
  • Preferred: developing and debugging software for new or early-stage hardware, including prototyping and technical evaluation.
  • Preferred: building Python tools for testing, automation, diagnostics, or data analysis on embedded systems.
