Description

The company has run commerce and payments for more than 25 years, serving consumers and businesses in about 200 markets.

Its two-sided network connects hundreds of millions of merchants and consumers, online and in person, through proprietary payment solutions as well as third-party payment networks.

Shoppers can pay from bank accounts, account balances, cards, cryptocurrencies, gift cards and eligible credit card rewards. Merchants get authorization, settlement, fast access to funds and payouts, plus tools for returns, customer engagement and risk.

This role leads the design vision, strategy and execution for the company's checkout, the flow that takes a shopper from the merchant experience to a completed payment. You will guide a team that optimizes and evolves these experiences at scale, combining strong design craft with experimentation, iteration and systems thinking.

You will work closely with Product and Engineering, help build a culture where designers advocate for customers, and push for simple, intuitive, high-quality checkout experiences.

The company is going through a once-in-a-generation transformation. Checkout is where experiences become real transactions that must meet regulation and handle identity, compliance, safety and security.

Responsibilities

  • Set a clear design vision and strategy that fits the Experience Design strategy and operations, and rally others behind it.
  • Direct user interface plans that affect revenue, expenses, budget and growth.
  • Negotiate with and influence senior internal and external executives.
  • Set operational and strategic goals that improve user and customer experience, drawing on deep domain expertise.
  • Guide cross-functional and cross-organization teams on experience design.
  • Find and resolve strategic user interface and interaction design problems with new or innovative solutions.
  • Execute on the existing three-year checkout strategy, setting design direction with partners and delivering within and beyond it, with focus on flows, handoffs and orchestration through completion.
  • Lead the optimization and evolution of existing experiences at scale through experimentation, iteration, customer insight and design judgment.
  • Lead design planning, prioritization and delivery with Product and Engineering, turning customer, business and technical needs into design outcomes.
  • Strengthen design systems, governance, standards and review processes for consistency, quality and scale.
  • Connect the Checkout design team with the wider Experience Design organization and raise the bar for craft, quality and advocacy.
  • Build and grow a high-performing design team that works well in ambiguity, challenges ideas constructively, and ships, learns and iterates.
  • Represent design to senior stakeholders, using storytelling, partnership and influence to shape priorities and outcomes.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of relevant experience and a Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5 years of experience leading others.
  • Significant product or experience design leadership, including leading design teams and design managers.
  • Proven record of optimizing complex, existing products or flows at scale through experimentation and iteration.
  • Current design craft and fluency with modern design tools. Everyone here is expected to be a maker, so you will review designs, work hands-on when needed, shape frameworks and solutions, and scale through your team.
  • Experience working within and shaping design systems.
  • Experience building, scaling or significantly improving design systems, governance models or design review processes.
  • Strong record of partnering with Product and Engineering while keeping a clear design point of view and advocating for customers and design quality.
  • Ability to work in ambiguity, make sound tradeoffs, and pair high craft with a firm commitment to delivery.
  • Excellent storytelling, communication, stakeholder partnership and executive influence skills.
  • Strongly preferred: experience designing checkout, commerce, payments, transactional flows or similarly complex digital experiences.
  • Strongly preferred: 10+ years of design leadership experience.
