Senior Design Engineer - Design System & Platform UI

Description

The design system team maintains the company's open-source design system, which serves as the shared UI base for its cloud product and several other projects.

The system runs as an internal service and is the single starting point for all UI work at the company. The team builds accessible, fast, well-documented React components driven by design tokens, and solves hard product requirements along the way.

The company is a rapidly scaling startup, and this role has a direct hand in shaping its culture.

Responsibilities

• Research, build and maintain React components and their APIs on top of headless WCAG 2.2 AA primitives. Build keyboard handling, focus management and theming into every component from the start.
• Improve the library with a focus on consistent, intuitive component APIs and better developer experience. Plan complex migrations using codemods and semantic versioning.
• Keep the shared infrastructure dependable: Storybook, unit, interaction, end-to-end and visual regression tests, accessibility checks and a reliable release process.
• Drive adoption through strong documentation, usage guidance and migration guides. Triage issues, including open-source ones, and review code with product teams.
• Build the AI-assisted layer: Figma-to-code, component scaffolding, and safeguards that keep AI-generated UI on-token, on-pattern and accessible.

Requirements

• 6+ years of frontend engineering experience, including building or maintaining a production design system used by several teams through its migrations and breaking changes.
• Deep knowledge of React, TypeScript, semantic HTML and CSS architecture at scale, including SASS, CSS Modules, CSS variables and CSS-in-JS.
• Experience designing component APIs (atomic design, composition, controlled and uncontrolled, polymorphic patterns) and using headless primitives such as React Aria, Ark UI or Radix.
• Working knowledge of WCAG 2.x and WAI-ARIA, and hands-on experience implementing and testing keyboard navigation, focus management and screen reader behavior.
• Experience with design token architecture and tools such as Style Dictionary, Terrazzo or DTCG, or equivalents, plus Figma variables sync.
• Treat the design system as a product with internal customers. Write clear documentation, review for consistency, mentor through code review, and measure success by adoption rather than component count.
• Fluent in Figma and in AI coding tools such as Claude Code or Cursor.
• Ideal backgrounds include design system or UI/UX platform teams at developer tools, B2B SaaS or cloud platform companies, and frontend platform roles maintaining a shared UI library used by multiple teams.
