Senior Backend Engineer

Description

The company is building a connected management system for restaurants, cafés, bars and coffee shops. It brings together sales, reservations, kitchen prep, payments and the data behind them in one platform.

It was founded by Arnout Schuijff, a co-founder of Adyen, and has €50 million in funding from Index Ventures and CapitalG. Thousands of venues in the Netherlands, the UK, Italy, Spain, Germany, Denmark and Finland already use it.

The team is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to build features that help restaurant staff work better. The work spans interfaces, backend services and the integration layer between them.

You will work closely with designers, product managers and other engineers to ship meaningful features quickly. As one of the first members of the team, you will also influence engineering culture, tooling and technical direction.

The role suits someone who works well in a fast-moving setting, enjoys solving real user problems and wants to bring better software to an industry that has been neglected by technology.

Responsibilities

• Build, test and release features end to end, from APIs to data models.
• Work with designers and PMs to turn user needs into intuitive product experiences that work.
• Take projects from idea through launch and afterwards, weighing speed, quality and scalability.
• Improve performance and reliability across both frontend and backend systems.
• Help evolve the codebase and technical architecture as the company grows.
• Contribute shared tooling, component libraries and good practices that raise the standard for the whole team.

Requirements

• At least 8 years of professional experience as a fullstack or backend engineer in a product-focused environment.
• Deep expertise in Kotlin, Java or Scala.
• Significant experience building distributed systems that are scalable, resilient and work well together.
• Experience with event-driven architectures, for example Kafka.
• Solid experience with relational databases such as Postgres.
• Comfortable working with APIs, relational databases and Docker.
• A product mindset: you care why something is built and optimise for user impact.
• You can work across functions and explain things clearly to both technical and non-technical colleagues.
• You pay close attention to detail and take pride in well-crafted user experiences.
• Restaurants and other merchants run many separate systems, including point of sale, reservations, kitchen display, payments and inventory. These systems rarely talk to each other, and the company is working to fix that.
• The restaurant software market is worth over €4 trillion globally.
