Description

The Passive Microwave Imaging Team in the Remote Sensing and Products Division scientifically develops the MWI and ICI missions on the upcoming Metop-SGB platform and the future CIMR satellite mission.

With the launch of Metop-SGB1 approaching, the team's main focus is calibration and validation of the MWI and ICI products and working with the user community.

Once MWI and ICI move into operations, the team will monitor product quality continuously, support users, run internal studies and help prepare future passive microwave and sub-millimetre radiometer programmes such as CIMR.

The company has provided digital end-to-end systems and engineering services for over 40 years, with more than 2000 staff worldwide, and works as a long-term partner for space and defence organisations.

Responsibilities

  • Support the in-house prototype development and upkeep of Level 1 and Level 2 product generation functions for passive microwave and sub-millimetre radiometers.
  • Support calibration and validation of Level 1B and Level 2 passive microwave products: build new tools, maintain and extend existing ones, run routine Cal/Val tests and write Cal/Val reports.
  • Create and maintain test and auxiliary datasets used to develop, verify, validate and run the operational processors.
  • Support the operational implementation, validation and evolution of the operational processors.
  • Compare results from the in-house prototypes against the operational processors.
  • Work closely with scientists, external agencies and industrial partners on the passive microwave missions, including Science Advisory Group meetings.
  • Help with internal data analysis and its delivery, and review external studies.
  • Take part in ground segment and instrument reviews, progress meetings and technical meetings.
  • Pull relevant information from the passive microwave processing chains to produce regular production and quality monitoring reports.
  • Report anomalies in product services, help diagnose them and track them until resolved.
  • Keep design and other relevant documentation up to date, including product processing facilities.

Requirements

  • A university degree in remote sensing, meteorology, physics, engineering, IT, computational science or another relevant discipline.
  • Strong scientific software development experience (modularity, readability, adaptability) with configuration management.
  • Very good Python skills.
  • Fluent in Linux/Unix.
  • Fluent English is mandatory.
  • Proven experience writing scientific and technical documents.
  • Experience processing Level 1 and Level 2 data from passive microwave instruments is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of another European language is an advantage.
  • Advantageous: very good skills in at least one of C/C++, Fortran or, in particular, Java.
  • Advantageous: familiarity with MATLAB.
  • Advantageous: experience with microwave radiative transfer models.
  • Advantageous: familiarity with numerical weather prediction forecast data.
  • Advantageous: experience with calibration and validation of satellite data products.
  • Advantageous: experience specifying, developing and validating satellite data processing chains.
  • Advantageous: experience understanding and specifying requirements.
  • Advantageous: experience in quality control of satellite data, product monitoring and reporting.
  • Advantageous: experience in software unit, acceptance, system and integration testing.
