Description

The company runs an online auction for returned and overstock goods. Items are listed and bid on in its mobile app, and winners collect them from its warehouses near Charlotte, North Carolina.

It serves more than 55,000 customers a month, sells over 25,000 items a day and receives more than 7 million bids a month.

The company runs its own warehouses and builds its technology in-house, so the development team hears directly from the customers and staff who use its work. Ideas can go live and be measured within days.

Responsibilities

  • You report to the Head of Engineering and own product design for the app, website, internal systems, tools and AI agents. Alongside the Head of Engineering and the founder, you set design priorities and bring customer and employee needs into product choices.
  • You work with developers and operations staff to learn how the tools are used, spot what could be better, and design practical fixes. You stay involved from framing the problem and testing ideas through to building and measuring the outcome.
  • You own design for the mobile and web apps, covering research, user flows, prototypes and final specs for bidding, winning, paying and pickup.
  • You propose changes to how auctions work. Lot pages, bidding rules, notifications, scheduling and store credit are all open, and your aim is more bids, more repeat buyers and faster pickup.
  • You speak for customers and employees. You run usability tests, study behavior in the data, and turn findings into journey maps and clear recommendations.
  • You engage engineers from the first sketch. You help define requirements, keep designs realistic to build, and check shipped work against your designs.
  • You test and iterate quickly. With tens of thousands of sales a day, the effect of a change shows up in the numbers within about a week.
  • You build and maintain a shared component library for iOS, Android and web that meets WCAG.
  • You present and defend design decisions to engineering and leadership, and revise them when the evidence points elsewhere.

Requirements

  • A portfolio of end-to-end case studies for products that shipped. This is the main thing the team screens on.
  • 2 to 5 years of product design experience, or 3+ years owning a product area on consumer mobile and web.
  • Proficiency in Figma or an equivalent tool.
  • Hands-on user research, including interviews and usability tests you ran yourself.
  • Experience with design systems and accessibility (WCAG).
  • You write your own briefs and specs and work directly with engineers.
  • Fluency in the iOS Human Interface Guidelines and Material Design.

Conditions

The annual base salary is between $85,000 and $120,000, set by relevant experience, qualifications and demonstrated design skill.

Benefits

  • Medical insurance.
  • Paid time off and company holidays.
  • Work from anywhere for up to 4 weeks a year.
  • An equipment budget and a MacBook.
  • In-house leadership training and mentorship.
