Description

The team is hiring a principal researcher for AI experience. The role mixes qualitative and quantitative methods to explain what users do and the reasons behind it, so the work can give product teams a clear direction to act on.

You sit between the people using the product and the machine learning systems behind it. You turn user needs, behaviour and feedback into measurable signals that help the team judge and raise model quality, with the aim of making the AI useful, trustworthy and easy to use.

The role is a generalist one that spans methods and stages of product development. An engineering background is not required, but you should be interested in how AI systems work and be able to work well with technical colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Find and rank opportunities along the end-user journey by linking large-scale behavioural data with qualitative findings, and use them to shape product strategy and roadmap priorities.
  • Set the research strategy and rank the research portfolio by the most important user and business questions, picking methods that balance scope, depth, speed and confidence so leaders can make investment decisions.
  • Turn user needs and behaviour into clear signals that guide the design, build and evaluation of AI and machine learning systems.
  • Define how AI-powered experiences will be evaluated, including frameworks, quality standards and shared success measures for product, design and machine learning teams. Link model performance to usability, relevance, trust and user outcomes.
  • Investigate failures in models and experiences, find recurring patterns, and recommend fixes across the product and the systems beneath it.
  • Act as a strategic partner to product, design, engineering, data science and machine learning leaders. Frame the key questions, test assumptions and help teams agree on direction based on evidence.
  • Evaluate new concepts throughout development, from early discovery and prototyping through launch and ongoing improvement.
  • Present findings through clear stories, data visualisations, research artifacts and recommendations that suit both technical and non-technical audiences.

Requirements

  • You have experience using AI in your work, or you have thought critically about its role in work processes, decisions or problem solving. This can include using AI tools, automating workflows, analysing AI-driven insights, or assessing how AI could change your function or industry.
  • You have 10+ years of professional experience in user experience research, product research, human-computer interaction, behavioural science or a closely related field.
  • You have a solid grounding in qualitative and quantitative methods, including generative and evaluative approaches. You use sound judgment on sampling, survey design, experiments, bias, validity and data interpretation.
  • You have shown you can analyse large or complex behavioural datasets, including product usage logs, and turn the results into product insights teams can act on.
  • You communicate well in writing, speech and visuals, and you can make complex findings clear to different audiences.
  • You build alignment and manage stakeholders well, and you have worked with product managers, engineers and designers to reach shared decisions.
  • You bring a portfolio or work samples that show your research process, your analysis and how your work shaped product decisions and user outcomes.
  • Nice to have: experience running lean UX research in a fast-moving environment.
  • Nice to have: experience researching AI-powered, machine learning, conversational, search or recommendation experiences.
  • Nice to have: experience building or improving evaluation systems, benchmarks, rubrics or quality metrics for AI products.
  • Nice to have: familiarity with product analytics, experimentation platforms, data visualisation tools or statistical software.
  • Nice to have: experience with SQL, R, Python or similar tools. Strong technical fluency is valued, but hands-on programming is not required.
