Principal Systems/Software Engineer Cloud & On-Premise Software Development

Description

This is a hybrid role that requires working from an HPE office on average 2 days per week.

The role sits within a cloud-native security management platform for Juniper SRX and vSRX firewalls, Secure Edge and hybrid cloud environments, managed through one web interface and positioned as the management portal for SASE. An on-premises version of the same platform, the successor to Junos Space Security Director, is also part of the work.

The platform covers unified policy management, Zero Trust, Zero Touch Provisioning, threat visibility, analytics, automation and API-driven integrations.

The job family covers designing, building, troubleshooting and debugging software for enhancements and new products, and determining or influencing hardware compatibility and design.

You will be a senior technical leader whose work has visible impact on a product or its components. You will apply deep expertise and new ideas to hard problems, with the aim of cutting costs or meeting current and future customer needs.

You will be a recognized internal authority in a key technology area, giving technical direction to large projects and programs.

You will lead cross-functional engineering efforts, guide architecture decisions and make sure work is delivered.

You will coach and mentor engineers and spread good practice and knowledge across the organization.

Responsibilities

• Own several core software modules from end to end, solving technical problems in a fast-moving development and debugging setting.
• Lead, mentor and develop junior engineers on the team.
• Define architectures and methods for software design and development that apply across several platforms and organizations in the Global Business Unit.
• Assess new technologies, innovations and outsourced development partners against the technology roadmap and business value, and plan how to bring them into the architecture.
• Review designs and project work against development guidelines and standards, giving concrete feedback that improves quality and reduces the risk of failure.
• Use your domain expertise, business judgment and experience to shape decisions made by technical leaders, outsourced partners and industry standards groups.
• Guide and mentor less experienced staff, setting the standard for software design and development.

Requirements

• Experience building cloud products with a microservices architecture.
• Extensive knowledge of cloud applications and technologies.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and software debugging skills.
• Experience designing and building software design tools and languages.
• Experience with the overall architecture of software systems for products and solutions.
• Experience designing software that runs on multiple platform types and integrating it into an overall architecture.
• Proven work in cross-geography, globally distributed engineering teams, collaborating across time zones and cultures on complex software.
• Write robust unit tests, raise code coverage through automation, validate new and existing functionality, and document and run functional tests before QA handoff.
• Extensive hands-on experience in several of the technology areas listed below, and the ability to adapt quickly and contribute in adjacent areas.
• A record of innovation, with multiple patents or deployed solutions in software design.
• Excellent written and verbal communication in English and the local language.
• Ability to explain product architectures and design proposals and negotiate options with business unit and executive audiences.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or Engineering.
• Typically 10+ years of experience.
• Security domain experience.
• Experience developing network management systems.
• Experience building software platforms that applications consume.
• Core technologies: Go (1.24+), Java (Spring Boot, Spring Framework, Jakarta EE), PostgreSQL or an equivalent database, Elasticsearch, gRPC, Protocol Buffers, REST, OpenAPI/Swagger.
• Cloud technologies: Apache Kafka (Confluent, Sarama), Redis-based queues, Docker, Kubernetes and its client libraries, Prometheus, distributed tracing, structured logging (SLF4J/Logback), and a load balancer such as Ambassador or equivalent.
• Other technologies: Bazel, Maven, Helm, OAuth2, SAML, JWT, Jenkins CI/CD.
