Description

The company is a well-established fire safety consultancy hiring a Principal Fire Engineer for its Fire Team.

The role suits an established consultant who wants to advance, or an engineer who wants to build their knowledge and design skills.

You will work with office leads to run and grow a local team, guiding and mentoring staff with support from senior colleagues. Proven experience across sectors and technical fire engineering work in a client-focused setting is expected.

The company is publicly traded and gives access to industry-leading technology and thinking. It is a Fortune 500 firm with Professional Services revenue of $16.1 billion in fiscal year 2025, working across transportation, buildings, water, new energy and the environment.

The company employs over 50,000 planners, designers, engineers, scientists and programme and construction managers worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Take projects from start to finish with little senior oversight, using CFD modelling, evacuation modelling and other analytical fire engineering methods.
  • Manage design projects, and prepare and review other people's work.
  • Apply your experience across several sectors and technical fire engineering work, with a strong focus on UK rules and the UK market.
  • Adapt standard procedures and methods from earlier assignments to solve new problems.
  • Take part in interdisciplinary reviews of project deliverables.
  • Lead accurate cost estimates for the technical work on projects.
  • Lead the Performance & Review process for junior engineers, setting and tracking SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound) goals.
  • Support and mentor less experienced staff working towards Chartership.

Requirements

  • Hold a relevant degree or professional qualification.
  • Hold chartered status (CEng) in fire engineering or a neighbouring discipline. This is essential.
  • Have worked in a similar consultancy or another relevant business.
  • Bring experience across several sectors, including technical fire engineering work, with a strong focus on UK rules and the UK market.
  • Show you have managed the fire engineering side of small to medium design projects within agreed timescales and budgets.
  • Have experience guiding entry-level fire engineers.
  • Have experience preparing fee proposals and task variations for fire engineering work.
  • Preferred: have led and actively supervised a team of junior engineers, covering both people and projects.
  • Preferred: have a clear work history and evidence of professional development and learning.

Conditions

Hybrid working: work from an office, remotely or at a client site.

All new hires must attend an in-person Day 1 onboarding at a company office location as a condition of employment, as part of its secure recruitment process.
