Description

The company's defense systems unit is hiring a Principal (Level 3) Environmental Engineer for its EHS team at the Elk River, MN site.

The site is a defense development facility that processes, assembles and tests military ammunition and munitions. It covers 3,200 acres with over 30 active buildings.

The role supports a growing business and sits within a larger EHS team that covers several facilities with shared goals.

The engineer uses ISO 14001 practices to drive environmental protection, risk reduction, compliance and sustainability, and runs internal and external compliance inspections onsite.

Responsibilities

  • Track and interpret county, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and federal EPA rules, assess their effect on operations, and set up ways to stay compliant.
  • Run onsite inspections to check compliance and good practice, escalate problems and trends, and keep improving controls.
  • Lead hazardous waste management, including generation, accumulation, labeling, storage, tracking, characterization and profiling of new and changing waste streams.
  • Oversee parts of the site's Hazardous Waste Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility permit.
  • Prepare emissions calculations, reports, permits, sampling and monitoring so compliance holds and internal tracking stays current.
  • Work with departments onsite to design and put in place controls that prevent releases, drive improvements and adapt to changes.
  • Review changes to facilities, processes and purchases so environmental factors are addressed from scoping through implementation.
  • Study expansion projects, modifications, maintenance and process changes to determine their impacts and permitting needs.
  • Monitor the site's effects on air, water and waste, and apply best practices and new technology to reduce them and reach sustainability targets.
  • Perform environmental field sampling and interpret lab analysis reports.
  • Support emergency planning for hazardous materials, chemicals and emissions.
  • Develop and maintain the site's ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
  • Build working relationships with county, state and federal regulators to keep communication open and resolve concerns.
  • Investigate incidents, file regulatory reports and follow up on corrective actions.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in environmental, safety, engineering or a related science plus 5 years of related engineering experience, or a master's degree in a STEM field plus 3 years of related experience.
  • Regulatory and permitting experience with the Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Hazardous Waste/RCRA, EPCRA, TRI, stormwater, drinking water and other emerging regulations.
  • Experience managing environmental compliance at a manufacturing or development site.
  • A proven record of planning and delivering work independently, with high quality, in a fast-changing environment.
  • Ability to work alone and in a team, multitask and facilitate well.
  • Attention to detail and comfort with ambiguity.
  • Strong communication skills to share information with cross-functional groups.
  • Works well with little supervision and stays organized while juggling several tasks.
  • Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint and Outlook, plus strong Excel skills for calculating and converting emissions and building reports.
  • Preferred qualifications: experience with explosives or other hazardous materials; experience with Hazardous Waste Treatment, Storage and Disposal permits; experience implementing an ISO 14001 compliant Environmental Management System; Hazardous Waste Operations Certification; DOT Hazardous Materials Certification; experience with REACH or other European regulations.
