Description

You will lead an engineering team that builds patient-facing web, iOS, and Android experiences for healthcare practices, covering engagement, access, and payments workflows.

This hybrid role is based in Austin, TX and reports to the Director of Engineering. You will manage a team of 6 to 10 junior and senior engineers split into parallel pods, and you will be accountable for both people development and reliable delivery across several workstreams.

You will work closely with Product, UX, Architecture, and other engineering teams to set priorities, clear blockers, and ship high-quality software in a regulated healthcare environment. The role mixes people leadership with hands-on technical input, including architecture, incident follow-up, and how the team uses AI-assisted development.

Responsibilities

  • Own delivery for the team: prioritization, staffing, planning, risk, execution, and quality. Spot dependencies early, remove blockers, and adjust plans when conditions shift.
  • Build an engaged, high-performing team. Set clear expectations, tie each person's work to outcomes that matter, recognize good work, give direct and timely feedback, and foster an inclusive environment.
  • Hire, coach, and grow engineers. Support their careers, manage performance fairly and consistently, and make sound decisions about staffing and team structure.
  • Work with Product, UX, internal users, and engineering leaders to understand customer needs, shape roadmaps, align priorities, and manage dependencies across teams.
  • Guide technical direction with architects and senior or principal engineers, weighing design trade-offs and implementation options.
  • Define and track engineering excellence metrics such as delivery predictability, quality, and team health.
  • Make sure engineering work and product delivery meet security, privacy, compliance, and accessibility requirements.
  • Adopt AI-assisted development yourself and help the wider organization do the same. Find practical ways to improve planning, delivery, and how the team works together.
  • Act as incident commander for the team. Provide escalation support, represent customer needs, guide debugging and root-cause analysis, turn findings into architecture and process changes, and join retrospectives to reduce repeat incidents.
  • Balance delivery commitments against technical debt, system reliability, and long-term maintainability.
  • Help new team members onboard and ramp up.
  • Represent the team in cross-functional planning, roadmap reviews, and dependency management.
  • Set clear working norms, engineering practices, and documentation that improve communication, decisions, and execution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 2 years of software engineering people management, with a record of hiring, motivating, coaching, and developing engineers and building an inclusive, accountable team.
  • Solid delivery management: running parallel workstreams, tracking milestones and dependencies, managing risk, and reporting progress clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • A product mindset and a history of influencing and coordinating across Product, Design/UX, Architecture, and Engineering without direct authority.
  • Enough technical depth to take part in architecture, system design, implementation, quality, and trade-off discussions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication for both technical and non-technical listeners.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools and judging their value in engineering work.
  • Preferred: familiarity with web, iOS, and/or Android delivery.
  • Preferred: experience in healthcare.
  • Preferred: experience using iterative delivery practices and metrics to improve predictability, quality, and team effectiveness.
  • Preferred: experience managing multiple teams, pods, or parallel engineering workstreams.

Conditions

Base salary ranges from $156,000 to $266,000, covering the full range for the role. Actual pay depends on job-related experience, skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and local market rates.

Eligible for an annual discretionary bonus, a variable compensation plan, and equity plans, depending on role eligibility.
