Principal Engineer

The company builds an AI literacy platform that listens to students read aloud, assesses reading skill, supports teachers with instruction and provides 1:1 tutoring.

Independent university and SEA efficacy research validates the platform, with effect sizes consistently above 0.4 and gains that exceed those of 1:1 human tutoring.

The platform works as a district-wide growth engine. It ties assessment, instruction and tutoring to the curriculum a district has chosen.

The software spots each student's skill gaps and works with teachers to create lesson plans that follow district curricula and draw on the district's own instructional materials. Students get the individual practice they need, whether they are ahead or below grade level.

The platform is used by more than 2,000 districts, works with twelve state education agencies and serves 3.5 million students worldwide.

This is a Principal Engineer role on the team.

Responsibilities

• Own complex backend systems from design to operation, covering architecture, integration points, performance tuning and scale across services and data platforms.
• Design and run large-scale data pipelines and backend services on AWS, using Lambda, DynamoDB, Redshift, Athena, Glue and S3.
• Build and maintain backend APIs and distributed data workflows in a cloud-native setup, using modern practices, including AI-assisted ones.
• Build services and data pipelines in Node.js, Python,.NET and SQL that produce actionable insights and power data-driven features.
• Turn product and business requirements into technical designs, weigh tradeoffs, flag risks and constraints, and guide delivery across teams.
• Set up AI-assisted development workflows, CI/CD pipelines, automated tests and system-wide productivity gains.
• Create reusable AI-assisted workflows, tools and shared prompt libraries that raise development speed and code quality, and fold them into CI/CD and code review.
• Track technical output, delivery flow and overall system effectiveness.
• Lead technical design and development, take part in design and code reviews, propose architecture improvements and help the system evolve.
• Work with product managers, engineers, data scientists and customer-facing teams to set scope, rank work and ship high-impact technical solutions.
• Coach teammates on AI-assisted development and improve team processes to remove bottlenecks.

Requirements

• A Master's degree in Computer Science or a closely related field, or a foreign equivalent.
• Three years of experience in a related role designing, developing, testing and deploying software and machine learning solutions in production.
