Description

The company uses technology to expand opportunity, improve public safety and make city government work better. Its work includes affordable broadband, defending against cyber threats and building digital public services.

This is the Principal Automation Engineer role on the Infrastructure Management team. You will provide site reliability engineering for all current and new automation services, write and maintain code, act as the final escalation point, lead design sessions and oversee DevOps Engineers alongside your own work.

The work reaches millions of people, and the role offers a chance to shape how technology serves the public.

Responsibilities

  • Own site reliability for all current and new automation services, keeping them reliable, fast and available to target.
  • Serve as the final escalation point for production incidents, run root cause analysis and resolve complex platform problems.
  • Act as technical owner of production environments, setting and enforcing standards, documentation and operating practices.
  • Write, update and maintain infrastructure and automation code, such as CI/CD pipelines, IaC modules and monitoring and alerting scripts.
  • Lead design sessions for new services, cluster growth and platform changes so the architecture meets scale and security needs.
  • Plan and prioritize your own work while managing, coordinating and reviewing the work of DevOps Engineers to meet delivery dates.
  • Take on special projects and initiatives as assigned.

Requirements

  • Hold a master's degree in computer science from an accredited college or university, plus three (3) years of progressively more responsible, full-time, satisfactory IT experience in application or systems development, data communications and networking, database administration, data processing or user services. At least eighteen (18) months of this must be in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity in those areas, or in supervising staff doing that work.
  • Or hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university plus four (4) years of the same kind of experience described above.
  • Or hold a four-year high school diploma or equivalent plus six (6) years of the same kind of experience described above.
  • Or combine education and experience equivalent to any of the options above. In every case you need at least a four-year high school diploma or equivalent, at least three (3) years of the IT experience described above, and the eighteen (18) months of administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory experience.
  • Without a baccalaureate degree, undergraduate credits may replace up to two (2) years of IT experience at 30 semester credits per six (6) months. Graduate computer science credits may replace up to one (1) year of IT experience at 30 graduate semester credits per year. Neither undergraduate nor graduate credits can replace the eighteen (18) months of administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory experience.
