Description

The Public Interest Technology (PIT) Crew sits within the NYC Office of Technology and Innovation and builds the technology, products and services meant to make New York City more affordable.

The crew designs, builds and launches public-facing products for New Yorkers.

This is a hands-on executive role that shapes where the PIT Crew is headed. You will bring clarity to unclear situations and turn problem statements into working products and services, working alongside designers, engineers, product managers, user researchers, policy experts and other city employees.

You will set up and lead the product management and design practice for the crew, help the team do excellent product and design work, and act as a subject-matter expert in your field. You will also jump into hands-on work, including individual contributor tasks, when a situation calls for it.

Beyond running a set of short-term projects, you will help set the crew's long-term direction, connect strategy to lasting momentum, advise on team structure and hiring, and build a culture that ships quickly and responsibly for New Yorkers.

Responsibilities

  • Build and lead a high-performing team that delivers measurable results for New Yorkers.
  • Set modern best practices for your discipline and encourage the team to adopt them.
  • Manage and mentor staff so their time in City service is positive and meaningful.
  • Build a culture that values speed, quality, pragmatism and public service.
  • Own the team's high-level roadmap, scope new projects, and decide how projects are staffed.
  • Make sure launches succeed and produce measurable results, and that every product meets strong standards for usability, accessibility, security and privacy.
  • Align a wide range of stakeholders, including staff within the Office of Technology and Innovation, City Hall, other City agencies and external partners.
  • Take on special projects and initiatives as assigned.
  • Be on call and work shifts that may include weekends, nights or evenings, given the 24/7 nature of the operation.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college plus five years of satisfactory full-time experience in projects and policies relevant to the role.
  • Equivalent education and/or experience may be accepted in place of the degree and years above.
