Description

You will help build embedded flight software for CO2, H2O and gas analyzer sensor controllers. The work supports the next-generation spacesuit, the Human Landing System lunar lander and the Artemis Program at NASA Johnson Space Center.

The role covers prototyping, requirements, design, coding, testing, integration and certification of embedded software, along with running and reviewing software unit tests.

The team needs someone self-driven who communicates clearly in writing and speech, works well with people, and adapts when new tasks come up.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build embedded flight software that controls CO2, H2O and gas analyzer sensors.
  • Write C unit tests from your own test plans using the UT-Assert framework and Gcov, covering both structure and function.
  • Judge unit test results by pass/fail, path coverage, loop boundary limits and Modified Condition/Decision Coverage (MC/DC).
  • Find the cause of failed tests and work with other software engineers to fix unit test problems.
  • Review C code to catch logic errors.
  • Do systems engineering on software requirements, interface definitions, design and performance analysis.
  • Carry out software integration, test and verification, including integrating software and hardware in avionics test beds and flight certification environments.
  • Work with engineering teams and contractors across several NASA programs and projects.
  • Follow JSC standard software process practices.
  • Write and maintain test plans, test cases and test scripts, and run manual and automated tests for function, performance and security.
  • Log, document and track defects in issue tracking tools, and work with developers to reproduce and fix them.
  • Run regression tests so new changes do not break existing features.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Hold a B.S. in aerospace, electrical, software, computer or systems engineering, computer science, biomedical engineering or a closely related field.
  • Have at least 3 years of embedded software development experience. More is highly valued.
  • Write strong C code.
  • Have worked in a Linux environment.
  • Have built C/C++ unit tests in aerospace or other fields such as commercial software, oil and gas, or petrochemical work, using a framework like Google Test (gTEST), UT-Assert or CppUnit.
  • Have built embedded firmware for microcontrollers.
  • Have substantial experience across the full software life cycle.
  • Be flexible and comfortable with new challenges in a dynamic setting, with strong technical skill and clear verbal and written communication.
  • Manage several priorities with little supervision.
  • Be highly responsible, team-oriented and hardworking.
  • Desired: an M.S. in computer science, software engineering, electrical or computer engineering, aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering or a related discipline.
  • Desired: experience in aerospace systems and vehicles is preferred. Experience in other fields where software affects human safety, such as medical, petrochemical or oil and gas, is also valued.
  • Desired: experience with GitLab and Git version control.
  • Desired: Python programming skills.
  • Desired: experience developing software over bus protocols such as RS-485, RS-422, RS-232, LVDS, 1553, USB and Ethernet.
  • Desired: experience with NASA Core Flight Software (CFS).
  • Desired: software and systems integration experience.
  • Desired: manual and automated testing experience, including verification testing.
  • Desired: experience with Jira.
  • Desired: experience with Agile/Scrum methods.
  • Desired: experience with human-rated space vehicle software on programs such as Space Shuttle, International Space Station, Orion, Commercial Crew or Gateway, across systems like C&T, C&DH or GN&C.
  • Desired: familiarity with CMMI Level 3 or higher process areas.
