The team works on flight-system navigation for space-launch, target, interceptor, advanced-weapons, tactical-strike and missile-defense applications within the company's space division.
The GNC Staff Engineer/Technical Lead role focuses on navigation modeling, analysis and simulation and is based in Chandler, Arizona.
You will act as the technical lead for inertial, satellite-based and integrated navigation solutions, and you will help mentor engineers while working with functional management, systems, software and program leaders.
You will split your time between hands-on modeling, simulation, analysis and algorithm development, and informal technical leadership, mentoring, technical reviews and input to staffing plans.
Responsibilities
Lead navigation architecture, modeling, simulation, analysis and verification across launch vehicle, target, interceptor, advanced-weapons, tactical-strike and missile-defense work.
Build and carry out a technical roadmap that grows the team's strategic navigation capability, including spotting knowledge gaps, ranking modeling and analysis investments and lining up work across programs.
Guide modeling, simulation, performance assessment and technical planning for the Strike and GPI programs and other matrixed efforts.
Own navigation performance assessment in hard conditions such as low-altitude flight, high-speed and high-dynamic engagements, glide-phase intercepts, space and exo-atmospheric missions, and GPS-degraded or denied settings.
Direct the building and evaluation of inertial, GPS/GNSS and integrated multi-sensor navigation, covering Kalman-filter estimation, sensor fusion, IMU modeling, covariance analysis and trade studies of aiding sources.
Assess sensor performance for IMUs, GPS receivers, radar altimeters and other aiding sources where relevant.
Turn program and customer requirements into navigation architectures, error budgets, analysis products, verification approaches and trade studies.
Assess navigation performance, robustness and implementation risk, define mitigations, and run verification and validation activities.
Work with software, systems engineering, mission analysis, integration and test teams to put navigation capabilities into flight software and simulation environments.
Develop and deliver navigation models and analyses on your own, and work directly with customers and other disciplines to define approaches, resolve issues and report results.
Review, mentor and guide navigation and GNC engineers, and work with functional leadership on team capability, development needs and staffing.
Explain technical approaches, risks, decisions and results to engineering teams, chief engineers, program leaders and customers.
Support proposals, capture and IRAD through technical planning, basis-of-estimate input and customer engagement as needed.
Other duties may be assigned.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline with 12 years of related experience, or Master's degree in a STEM discipline with 10 years of related experience, or PhD with 8 years of related experience. An additional 4+ years of experience will be considered in place of a degree.
Significant experience with inertial, satellite-based and integrated navigation systems.
Experience in navigation modeling, simulation, analysis and/or algorithm development for flight systems.
Demonstrated technical leadership across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Experience defining technical approaches, breaking down requirements, running trade studies and driving verification and validation.
Ability to work independently, lead complex technical efforts and mentor other engineers.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Secret security clearance.
Preferred: active DoD Secret security clearance or higher.
Preferred: experience with Linux and with C++, MATLAB, Simulink and Python.
Preferred: experience with IMUs, GPS receivers, radar altimeters and related navigation sensors.
Preferred: experience with Kalman filters, navigation algorithms, sensor fusion and simulation-based performance analysis.
Preferred: experience with navigation in high-dynamic, exo-atmospheric, GPS-degraded or GPS-denied environments.
Preferred: experience as a technical lead or subject matter expert for navigation or GNC efforts.
Preferred: experience supporting design reviews, verification planning, HWIL/SIL environments and flight test integration.
Preferred: strong written and verbal communication skills, including direct work with customers and senior technical leadership.
