Description

The company builds electric airplanes and works on electric aviation, with a mission built around sustainability and a team that values curiosity and a passion for flight.

You will lead an embedded software project for the company's airborne systems, with a team of developers and testers covering specification, architecture, design, coding, integration, testing and analysis.

The software must reach the highest safety-critical level in the industry and be certified to DO-178C.

The role is hands-on: you will write and test code yourself while leading the project.

Responsibilities

  • Review system architecture, functions, hardware specifications and safety requirements, then lead the design, integration, testing and analysis of the embedded software.
  • Work with systems, safety, configuration management, quality assurance and airworthiness engineers to get the software certified.
  • Meet project engineers to understand business needs, then set feature timelines, staffing, equipment and releases for hardware/software, system, Iron Bird and aircraft-level testing.
  • Assign work, feature sets and deadlines so the project runs efficiently and meets business goals.
  • Write and present status reports to company leadership and certification authorities covering team velocity, dependencies, constraints and certification issues.
  • Create and maintain certification documents such as software plans, standards and life cycle data, and take part in audits and reviews.
  • Contribute directly to requirements management, architecture, design and test development.
  • Train junior engineers on DO-178C objectives, activities and outputs, real-time safety-critical practice, and integration and troubleshooting methods.
  • Manage a small team of direct reports.

Requirements

  • Minimum qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science or a related field from an accredited university.
  • At least 10 years of real-time embedded software development for safety-critical systems.
  • Expert knowledge of the activities and outputs required for DO-178C Level A compliance.
  • Strong experience across the full software life cycle for aerospace embedded software.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills within a team.
  • Ability to organize and lead a team of up to 20 software engineers.
  • Experience with Stage of Involvement reviews and communicating with FAA personnel and DERs.
  • Experience with DO-330 tool qualification objectives, activities and outputs.
  • Experience with DO-331 model-based development objectives, activities and outputs.
  • Above and beyond qualifications
  • Deep knowledge of safety-critical embedded software practice, common communication devices and protocols, and multi-core processors.
  • Advanced techniques such as model-based software engineering, software product line engineering and formal methods.
  • Experience with embedded software for electric motor control, battery management systems and/or flight control systems.
  • Project management experience in estimating, tracking and reporting work, using traditional, kanban and scrum approaches.

Conditions

Pay ranges from $165,000 to $185,000 USD.

Pay depends on skills, experience, industry background and the changing needs of the role. The company is committed to fair and equitable pay and will discuss it during interviews.

Candidates are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet every minimum qualification.

Hiring decisions are based on merit, competence and qualifications, never on race, color, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, disability, veteran or military status, genetic information, pregnancy or any other protected characteristic under federal, state or local law.

Benefits

  • Restricted Stock Units and Performance Stock Units for all full-time team members.
  • Onsite healthcare in Vermont.
  • Medical, dental and vision coverage.
  • Short- and long-term disability cover.
