Description

The company builds neutral-atom quantum computers designed to scale, and works closely with academic and industry partners on quantum computing, error correction and fault tolerance.

This internship is for a scientific software intern who will help build the software linking high-level quantum applications to neutral-atom hardware. You will work alongside software engineers, experimental and computational physicists, and outside collaborators, on research and engineering at the meeting point of programming languages, compilers and quantum computing.

Projects range from studying new compilation methods and building prototypes to developing software infrastructure and integrating with quantum hardware. They cover quantum circuits, atom movement and pulse-level control. You will be paired with a mentor on a project that fits your interests, background and the team's priorities.

The compiler stack is moving from Python to Rust. You may improve existing tools, including the open-source compiler framework Kirin, or help build new infrastructure. Your output could be algorithms, research results, benchmarks, or tested and documented software. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and those received before Nov. 15, 2026 get full consideration. Terms are flexible, including outside the summer, and can be set around your availability.

Responsibilities

  • Explore research questions in quantum compilation, programming languages or scientific software, then build prototypes and test them through experiments and benchmarks.
  • Design domain-specific languages, intermediate representations, and compiler analyses and transformations for quantum circuits, atom movement or pulse-level control.
  • Build and extend compiler infrastructure in Rust or Python, and help connect it to quantum hardware platforms.
  • Work with your mentor, software engineers and physicists to set project goals, debate technical approaches and share results.
  • Write tests, documentation, and reproducible examples or experiments suited to your project.

Requirements

  • Programming experience in Python, Rust or another relevant language, and a willingness to pick up the tools your project needs.
  • A grounding in computer science or computational methods, shown through coursework, research, personal projects or other relevant work.
  • Interest in research, software engineering or both, applied to compilers and scientific software for quantum computing.
  • A systematic approach to technical problems, and the ability to explain ideas, questions and results clearly.
  • Enjoy collaborating and building tools that researchers and developers will use.
  • Preferred qualifications: the following backgrounds suit different projects, and you do not need all of them.
  • Academic training or research in computer science, physics, applied mathematics or a related field. (preferred)
  • Experience with compiler development, intermediate representations such as Static Single Assignment (SSA), program analysis or optimization. (preferred)
  • Knowledge of programming language design, type systems or programming language theory. (preferred)
  • Experience with Rust, systems programming or Python-based scientific software. (preferred)
  • Experience designing experiments, evaluating algorithms or developing reproducible benchmarks. (preferred)
  • Familiarity with quantum computing, quantum error correction or atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) physics. (preferred)
  • Experience with version control, code review, testing, debugging, profiling or open-source contributions. (preferred)
