Description

The company is recruiting graduates for its Traffic Engineering teams across the UK and Ireland, based in Leeds with a 2027 start.

The team is one of the largest dedicated traffic engineering groups in the UK and Ireland. It designs and assesses practical schemes for pedestrians, cyclists and motor vehicles, aiming for safer, more efficient and more sustainable transport networks.

Work covers road and street layouts, traffic signals, cycle facilities, traffic management and traffic modelling. Engineers and other technical specialists form multidisciplinary teams to produce cost-effective solutions for clients.

You may be involved in a project at any stage, from early concept and preliminary design through to modelling, detailed design and delivery. The work is fast-moving and collaborative and calls for creativity, technical skill, clear communication and a readiness to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Experienced engineers will guide and mentor you as you build your technical knowledge and professional skills.
  • You will work on live projects and complete structured training to build a solid grounding in traffic engineering and design.
  • Early on, you will help develop designs and technical solutions across project stages, attend site visits, meetings and workshops, and work with clients and other design professionals.
  • You will be trained in engineering, design and traffic modelling software. Depending on the project, this may include AutoCAD, Civil 3D, LinSig, TRANSYT and VISSIM. You will also learn digital engineering and BIM processes.
  • As your confidence and experience grow, you will take on more responsibility for project tasks and technical outputs, contributing from inception to completion.
  • Possible project areas include:
  • Road and street design
  • Junction and intersection design
  • Cycle lane and active travel design
  • Bus priority and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) schemes
  • Streetscape and urban improvement
  • Traffic management planning and design
  • Traffic signal design
  • Traffic signage and road markings
  • Traffic modelling and microsimulation
  • Traffic and transport impact assessments
  • Network analysis and optimisation
  • Feasibility studies and scheme development
  • Road safety assessments and audits
  • Graduates can also work with the Highways teams on major highways projects, which broadens your exposure across traffic and highway disciplines and deepens your understanding of transport and infrastructure design.

Requirements

  • A BEng in Civil Engineering, General Engineering or Geography, at 2:1 or equivalent or higher.
  • An MEng in Civil Engineering or General Engineering at 2:1 or equivalent or higher is advantageous.
  • An MA or MSc in Geography, Transport Planning or a related field is advantageous.
  • A relevant Master's in Mathematics or another quantitative subject will also be considered.
  • A genuine interest in traffic engineering, transport, and safe, efficient and sustainable networks.
  • Strong analytical, numerical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret and assess technical information.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Good technical and report-writing skills.
  • Strong written and spoken communication, and the ability to work well with colleagues, clients and other stakeholders.
  • The ability to organise and prioritise your work while supporting the wider team.
  • The ability to work both alongside others and independently, showing initiative, focus and a willingness to learn.
  • An enthusiastic, technically minded and motivated approach, with ambition and drive.
  • A commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Submit a covering letter and all predicted and/or achieved academic grades.
  • Apply early, as applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and candidates may be selected for an advanced offer start.
  • You must hold the permanent right to work in the UK. Visa sponsorship is not available for this role.
