Full-stack Engineer 4 - Machine Learning Experiences (MLX)

Description

This is a Full-stack Engineer 4 role on the Machine Learning Experiences (MLX) team, within a larger company that is driving a major transformation.

The work is collaborative and iterative, and it involves solving complex business problems for a large group of makers, breakers, doers and disruptors.

Responsibilities

• Lead several varied technology projects and a team of developers skilled in distributed microservices and full-stack systems, building solutions that address the company's regulatory obligations.
• Keep up with technology trends, try and learn new tools, take part in internal and external technology communities, and mentor fellow engineers.
• Work with digital product managers to build resilient cloud-based solutions that deliver strong customer experiences and help millions of Americans improve their finances.
• Work across languages and tools including Java, Scala, Python, Go, Node.js, JavaScript, TypeScript, open source relational and NoSQL databases, Docker, Kubernetes and a range of AWS services.
• Set technical direction for Agile teams, defining standards for design, development and operations.
• Work with architects to define service boundaries, integration patterns and reusable frameworks.
• Spot areas that need work, refactor where needed, and help reduce technical debt and improve system performance.
• Shape long-term technology strategy by assessing new tools and practices, and own what you build in a 'you build it, you own it' setup.

Requirements

• Basic: a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related quantitative field such as statistics, economics, operations research, analytics, mathematics or engineering.
• Basic: at least 4 years of software engineering experience. Internship experience does not count.
• Basic: at least 2 years of experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), cloud-based productivity tools or virtualization technologies.
• Preferred: a master's degree in computer science or a related field.
• Preferred: 7+ years of coding in more than two of Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Rust, C and Scala.
• Preferred: 3+ years working with databases and database management systems.
• Preferred: 3+ years with AWS, GCP, Azure, cloud-based productivity tools or virtualization technologies.
• Preferred: 4+ years contributing to open source frameworks.
• Preferred: 3+ years with front-end JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks.
• Preferred: 4+ years building synchronous and asynchronous APIs.
• Preferred: 3+ years with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code and automated testing frameworks.
• Preferred: 3+ years using Git-based version control (e.g., Git, GitHub, Bitbucket).
• Preferred: 3+ years troubleshooting technical issues in cloud environments.
• Preferred: experience with modern AI-based coding tools and IDE copilots.
• Preferred: 1+ year mentoring engineers and supporting their professional growth on technical teams.
• Preferred: 1+ year using observability to find and fix performance bottlenecks in distributed systems.
• Preferred: experience with interactive AI tools that go beyond basic code completion to boost productivity.
• Preferred: experience leading cross-functional engineering efforts or large-scale technical initiatives.
• Preferred: experience setting and enforcing coding standards and design patterns across teams.

Base salary ranges (full-time, annual) by location: Sales Territory $179,400 - $204,700; Cambridge, MA $197,300 - $225,100; McLean, VA $197,300 - $225,100; New York, NY $215,200 - $245,600; Richmond, VA $179,400 - $204,700; San Jose, CA $215,200 - $245,600.

These figures apply only to roles based in those locations and reflect the amount the company is willing to pay at the time of posting. Part-time pay is prorated to the agreed hours. Candidates hired elsewhere follow the range for their location, with the final salary stated in the offer letter.
