Description

At Spotify, our Subscriptions organisation helps listeners discover the value of Spotify, find the right subscription, and keep enjoying the content they love. From acquisition and activation to retention, commerce, and customer service, we build experiences that connect listeners with Spotify and support lasting relationships.

We're looking for an Engineering Manager II to lead a team of data and backend engineers within our Subscriptions Mission. Your team will build data products, pipelines, and services that help teams understand listener needs and deliver more relevant experiences. You'll work closely with product managers, data scientists, business partners, and engineers to turn complex challenges into reliable solutions. You'll also create an environment where engineers can grow, collaborate, and make a meaningful impact.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, support, and develop a team of data and backend engineers, creating an inclusive environment where everyone can contribute and grow.
  • Work with product managers, business partners, and engineering teams to set priorities and build data products that improve the subscription experience.
  • Guide the development of reliable, scalable data pipelines and backend services that support targeting, messaging, personalisation, and machine learning.
  • Help your team make informed technical decisions, balancing data quality, reliability, business needs, and long-term maintainability.
  • Support engineers through regular feedback, coaching, career development, and opportunities to share knowledge.
  • Collaborate across teams to manage dependencies, solve challenges, and build shared data solutions.
  • Improve engineering practices, including service reliability, sustainable on-call processes, and responsible data management.
  • Explore opportunities to use AI and automation to simplify workflows, improve data quality, and support your team's work.

Requirements

  • You have experience leading data or backend engineering teams and enjoy helping engineers develop their skills and careers.
  • You have a background in software or data engineering and can guide technical discussions about data architecture, distributed systems, scalability, and reliability.
  • You understand how to balance team development, technical decisions, and delivery priorities to achieve meaningful results.
  • You have worked with large-scale data pipelines, data platforms, or backend services. Experience with technologies such as Google Cloud, BigQuery, Apache Beam, Dataflow, dbt, Flyte, Airflow, Scala, or Java is valuable.
  • You can navigate changing priorities, make informed decisions, and help your team move forward when the path isn't always clear.
  • You communicate clearly and build effective partnerships with product, business, and engineering teams to turn shared goals into practical solutions.
  • You value different perspectives, encourage open feedback, and help create an environment where people feel respected and supported.
  • You're curious about new technologies, including AI and automation, and enjoy finding ways to improve how teams work and deliver value.
  • Where You'll Be
  • We offer you the flexibility to work where you work best! For this role, you can be within the EMEA region as long as we have a work location (excluding France due to on-call restrictions).
  • This team operates within the Central European and GMT time zone for collaboration.
  • Spotify is an equal opportunity employer. You are welcome at Spotify for who you are, no matter where you come from, what you look like, or what’s playing in your headphones. Our platform is for everyone, and so is our workplace. The more voices we have represented and amplified in our business, the more we will all thrive, contribute, and be forward-thinking! So bring us your personal experience, your perspectives, and your background. It’s in our differences that we will find the power to keep revolutionizing the way the world listens.
  • At Spotify, we are passionate about inclusivity and making sure our entire recruitment process is accessible to everyone. We have ways to request reasonable accommodations during the interview process and help assist in what you need. If you need accommodations at any stage of the application or interview process, please let us know - we’re here to support you in any way we can.
