Engineering Manager - Core Commerce Platform

Description

You will join the Core Commerce Platform organisation, which builds the omnichannel capabilities behind product browsing, stock availability, delivery promises, order processing and fulfilment, and post-purchase experiences across channels.

The role is an engineering manager position accountable for delivery, roadmap execution, operational quality and growing the engineering team. You will work with product owners, project managers, tech leads and peer engineering teams to make delivery predictable and build a culture of ownership and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Manage and grow a group of software engineers building basket, checkout, payments and consumer commerce services.
• Deliver commerce services that are highly available, secure and scalable, with a direct effect on conversion, revenue and the consumer experience.
• Own engineering work on payment gateway integrations, alternative payment methods, checkout orchestration, promotions, taxation and transactional workflows.
• Run planning and execution against team objectives and key results, keeping work aligned and reporting transparent.
• Manage sprints, delivery plans, team capacity, dependencies and risks.
• Work with product owners, project managers, the retail technology team and tech leads to reach business goals.
• Raise engineering standards through sound development practices, quality, operational discipline and steady improvement.
• Coach engineers with regular feedback, mentoring, performance reviews and support for career growth.
• Build a culture of ownership, accountability, collaboration and learning.
• Define engineering metrics and use the data to improve productivity, quality and delivery predictability.
• Drive use of AI-assisted engineering and automation to improve productivity, quality and delivery speed.
• Find ways to use AI in software development, testing, documentation, knowledge management and onboarding.
• Work with engineering leadership on hiring, staffing, onboarding, talent development and succession planning.
• Oversee delivery partners and vendors where used, and make sure their work matches team objectives.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including leading engineering teams in an agile environment.
• 3+ years of people leadership experience.
• Proven ability to lead roadmap execution, delivery planning, dependency management and stakeholder work.
• Familiarity with API-first, cloud-native architectures and design patterns.
• Solid software engineering background, including building APIs, distributed systems and high-volume transactional platforms.
• Good working knowledge of basket, checkout, payment processing, promotions, pricing, taxation and other commerce services on modern eCommerce platforms.
• Experience integrating with payment gateways, fraud prevention providers, financial service providers and third-party commerce platforms.
• Understanding of payment security, tokenisation, authentication, PCI-DSS principles and secure transaction processing.
• Experience with event-driven architectures, high-volume transactional systems and enterprise integrations.
• Strong record of hiring, mentoring, developing and retaining high-performing engineers.
• Solid grasp of modern engineering practice, including architecture, code quality, automated testing, CI/CD and AI-assisted development.
• Strong communication, collaboration, decision-making and organisational leadership skills.
• Experience improving engineering quality, operational excellence, reliability, security and continuous improvement.
• Experience working in agile teams using Jira and Confluence or similar tools.
• A data-driven approach to using engineering, delivery and operational metrics to improve team effectiveness and predictability.
• Strong advantage: experience using coding agents, LLMs and AI-assisted engineering tools to improve delivery and team productivity.
• Preferred: experience in global DTC, retail, omnichannel commerce or high-volume consumer digital environments.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or a related field.
