Description

The company builds end-to-end software for fire and EMS agencies, helping them work more safely and effectively.

This role leads a team of software engineers and shapes the technical direction, delivery and operational health of the platform. It combines technical leadership, people management and cross-functional work to deliver scalable, reliable, customer-focused software.

The best fit is an engineering leader who can weigh technical direction, team growth and business priorities, and who builds accountability and continuous improvement into the team.

Responsibilities

  • Coach, develop and manage engineers, covering performance, career planning and regular feedback.
  • Work closely with product, design, QA and other stakeholders to ship high-quality software that meets business goals and customer needs.
  • Guide the team on architecture, system design, scalability, security and sound engineering practice.
  • Own planning, estimation, prioritization and delivery across the full product lifecycle.
  • Apply current AI-driven development methods to meet the department's software development lifecycle goals.
  • Set and maintain engineering standards, development workflows, code review, testing approaches and operating procedures.
  • Help engineers resolve technical problems and remove blockers so they can make sound decisions.
  • Track team health, delivery performance and velocity, and keep improving how engineering works.
  • Run hiring, workforce planning and onboarding to grow strong engineering teams.
  • Coordinate across distributed teams and time zones so communication and alignment hold across functions.
  • Act as the escalation point for critical production issues, coordinating incident response, root cause analysis and resolution.
  • Set up operational readiness, including support models, on-call processes, monitoring and ongoing improvement.
  • Shape long-term technology strategy and roadmap, balancing current needs with scalability and innovation.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 3 years in management, team lead or technical leadership roles.
  • A track record of leading engineers through complex software products and initiatives.
  • A solid grounding in software architecture, system design and current development practices.
  • Hands-on experience with hiring, performance reviews, coaching, career development and engagement.
  • Able to work with product and business stakeholders to turn requirements into scalable technical solutions and delivery plans.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and influencing decisions across several stakeholders.
  • Sharp problem-solving that balances technical quality, business priorities and delivery timelines.
  • Experience supporting production systems, incident management and operational excellence.
  • Clear written and verbal communication for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to build team culture, drive accountability and grow high-performing engineers.
  • Preferred: experience leading distributed or remote engineering teams.
  • Preferred: experience with cloud-based SaaS platforms and modern development methodologies.
  • Preferred: experience with current AI-driven software development practices.
  • Preferred: familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, monitoring and observability.
  • Preferred: experience in mission-critical or customer-facing software environments.
  • Preferred: exposure to mobile, web or platform engineering teams.
  • Preferred: experience evaluating technology investments, architecture tradeoffs and build-versus-buy decisions.
