The Core Engineering department runs the infrastructure and networking behind the company's website. It also builds shared capabilities across the stack, including application frameworks, developer experience, security and resilience.

You will lead one or more Core Engineering teams. You will help set the team's roadmap, improve how developers work, and speed up reliable delivery across the company.

Responsibilities

  • Own a shared Core Engineering domain, keep operations at a high standard, and set its short-term and long-term direction.
  • Review code and architecture, and give the team technical and design feedback.
  • Take an active part in recruiting and help grow the engineering team however you can.
  • Give regular performance feedback, hold one-on-ones, and support each direct report's career development.
  • Work with your technical and product counterparts to define a clear vision and direction for the team that supports company and business goals.
  • Choose new technology vendors and manage existing ones. Make build-or-buy decisions with your team on an ongoing basis.
  • Share technical and product decisions with the right people, clear blockers, and work with other leaders across the organization.

Requirements

  • You have built and led lean teams that are productive, motivated and able to deliver meaningful results.
  • You foster safe, collaborative and inclusive environments where engineers feel free to do their best work.
  • You are skilled at shaping complex, user-focused roadmaps and keeping a team on track in a fast-moving, changing environment.
  • You can explain complex technical ideas clearly to non-technical audiences and represent the team's work accurately to many kinds of stakeholders.
  • You know the technology industry well enough to guide the team toward sound tooling and framework choices.
  • You lead by setting context, bringing people together, and building buy-in across product, design, engineering and leadership.
  • You have worked as an engineer, and you understand the challenges of that role.
  • Preferably, you have hands-on experience with tooling across a modern tech stack.
  • Preferably, you have hands-on experience building highly available, distributed systems, especially container orchestration systems.
  • Experience with every technology below is not expected. The list is included for transparency. The company values your core engineering skills and your ability to learn over deep expertise in any one tool or language.

  • Monitoring and alerting: Datadog
  • Networking: Fastly, Kong, Cilium
