Description

The Sports Media Team builds platforms and products that collect, curate, distribute, analyze and personalize sports data and content.

The team holds exclusive data rights with top leagues including MLB, NBA, NHL and NASCAR, and delivers some of the quickest and most precise live game data available.

Customers such as Apple, Google and Amazon, along with thousands of others worldwide, build products on the team's APIs. Its analytics and broadcast tools supply the stats and storylines that millions of fans see during the World Series, the Super Bowl and every game in between.

The company is looking for an engineering manager to lead a group of engineers building enterprise-grade, high-uptime sports analytics and broadcast tools. The role combines people management with hands-on technical work: you will grow the team while helping shape architecture and technical decisions, and keeping the data accuracy and software quality that enterprise customers rely on.

Hiring process: an initial screening with Talent Acquisition, a hiring manager interview, technical and leadership interviews with key stakeholders and engineering leaders, then a final discussion of expectations and next steps.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of software engineers through regular 1:1s, team retrospectives and clear performance feedback, and invest in each engineer's career growth.
  • Set expectations, agree on goals, run performance reviews, and link each engineer's career aims to team and product backlogs.
  • Mentor engineers at every level on both technical and professional growth.
  • Build a culture of collaboration, ownership and continuous improvement, and encourage engineers to solve problems creatively without lowering quality, reliability or uptime standards.
  • Give hands-on architectural direction across the team's systems, guiding decisions on system design, data modeling and service boundaries.
  • Identify systemic risks, prioritize technical debt reduction, and weigh that work against feature delivery.
  • Take part in design reviews, merge request reviews and technical discussions.
  • Promote engineering best practices in reliability, observability, security, performance, agentic development and maintainability at scale.
  • Make sure systems meet the uptime and data accuracy standards enterprise customers expect.
  • Lead post-mortems and see incident follow-up through to completion.
  • Use agentic development tools to raise delivery speed while keeping quality, readability and architectural consistency high.
  • Work closely with Product to turn business goals into well-scoped, well-sequenced engineering initiatives.
  • Set up and maintain delivery swim lanes that give engineers clear priorities and focused work.
  • Own the team's delivery commitments, forecast accurately, raise risks early, and ship high-quality software consistently.
  • Balance feature work, platform investment and technical debt, keeping the trade-offs open and defensible.
  • Join cross-functional planning with Product, Design, DevOps and Architecture to align work and define clear ownership boundaries.

Requirements

  • You lead people first and enjoy building high-performing teams while staying technically engaged.
  • You work well in fast-moving settings, care about software quality and reliability, and can weigh long-term engineering investment against day-to-day delivery.
  • You have 3+ years of engineering management experience, including direct line management of software engineers.
  • You have a record of developing engineers through coaching, performance management and career planning.
  • You have worked with Product Managers on backlogs, sprint planning and delivery commitments in an Agile environment.
  • You handle performance conversations directly and constructively.
  • You have 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, with enough hands-on depth to judge architecture and code quality credibly.
  • You have designed and run data-driven, high-uptime production systems, including microservices, RESTful APIs and event-driven architectures.
  • You are proficient with SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • You have worked on high-throughput, low-latency production systems, and you understand CI/CD, development workflows and AWS cloud infrastructure.
  • You have experience with sports data or real-time data products.
  • You have worked in enterprise SaaS, and understand uptime, data accuracy and SLA commitments for customer-facing products.
  • You have experience with serverless technologies, including AWS Lambda, SQS and Step Functions.
