Description

The company helps small businesses run their operations by taking care of HR tasks, so owners can focus on their own work.

The Growth Expansion team drives revenue from existing customers by offering products, features and upgrade paths inside the product as their needs change.

The team detects signals that show a customer is changing and turns them into nudges customers can act on, and builds upsell and cross-sell flows so customers can change their product themselves.

The company works in a casual, supportive setting and offers strong benefits, wellness programs, company retreats, and chances to learn from startup leaders. It values its people and is data-driven.

The role is a player-coach role: you lead and grow a team of software engineers while still writing code.

Responsibilities

  • Build and lead a team of software engineers, including hiring, developing and retaining strong performers.
  • Coordinate projects, set priorities and keep engineers motivated to build and maintain customer-facing features.
  • Work with engineers, designers and product managers to plan, schedule and deliver projects so new features ship quickly.
  • Partner with Product on the team's long-term strategy and quarterly roadmap, including setting goals and tracking progress against them.
  • Communicate and coordinate with teams inside and outside engineering to understand requirements and find areas to improve.
  • Mentor engineers in technical skills, and foster technical excellence, innovation and continuous learning.
  • Guide direct reports on both technical and non-technical matters.
  • Lead technical discussions with other teams across the company and help drive sound technical decisions.
  • Build empathy in the team for internal stakeholders, aiming for workflows that are easier and more efficient.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience as a software engineer on production web applications.
  • At least 1 year of experience managing a team of engineers.
  • A proven record of setting priorities, shaping plans and delivering them.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex ideas to technical and non-technical people.
  • High empathy and strong interpersonal skills, able to bring people together across functions.
  • Solid grounding in core web development, including data structures, data stores, algorithms, distributed systems and common patterns.
  • Good judgment: you analyse problems and their implications, spot patterns, understand risks, plan mitigations and own the outcome.
  • Resourcefulness: you take a can-do approach under constraints and make the most of what you have.
  • Teamwork and communication: you document work, collaborate, listen, build relationships, recruit and promote the team's work.
  • Influence and leadership: you share knowledge, mentor others and think ahead.
  • Continuous learning: you actively build domain knowledge and best practices.
  • Alignment with the company values, known as COGIS: camaraderie, openness, grit, integrity and simplicity.
  • Hands-on experience with the following technologies: Golang, Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, MySQL, Kafka, AWS, Git, Memcache, Redis, ElasticSearch, Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes, CircleCI and DataDog.
