Join us as an Engineering Manager – Agentic Engineering

At Barclays, we're changing how software gets built. AI agents now draft code, write tests, triage defects, fix vulnerabilities and review merge requests alongside our engineers, and we're looking for an Engineering Manager to help us make the most of that shift. This isn't about rolling out a tool. It's about leading a team where people and agents work well together, so we deliver better software faster and more safely for millions of customers.

You'll lead a team of talented engineers and treat agentic engineering as the way your team works, not a side project. You'll build the shared context agents need to do good work, rethink how your team delivers, and make sure engineers spend their time on what needs human judgement: framing problems, making architectural trade-offs, working with product and design, and handling the edge cases no agent will predict. You'll also create a team that great engineers want to join and don't want to leave.

What We Can Offer You

The chance to shape how one of the UK's leading banks adopts agentic engineering at scale.

A team environment where tedious work is automated and engineers focus on hard, interesting problems.

Investment in your learning, including access to the latest AI engineering tools and communities of practice.

Hybrid working

Purpose of the Role

To lead and develop a high-performing engineering team that uses agentic engineering to improve delivery speed, quality and engineer experience, while keeping the strong governance, security and auditability expected in a regulated environment.

To Be Successful in This Role, You Should Have

Proven experience leading and growing software engineering teams in a complex, ideally regulated, environment.

A strong engineering background with hands-on experience of modern software delivery (CI/CD, automated testing, code review, cloud or platform engineering).

Practical experience using AI coding agents and assistants in day-to-day engineering, and a clear point of view on where they add value and where they need guardrails.

A track record of improving delivery outcomes using DORA-style metrics rather than activity measures.

A good understanding of secure coding practices, quality gates and engineering governance.

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders, product partners and engineers alike.

A genuine commitment to developing people, building inclusive teams and creating psychological safety.

Some Other Highly Valued Skills May Include

Experience designing reusable agent workflows, skills or instruction sets for an engineering team.

Familiarity with orchestrating multiple agents, or with tools that connect agents to systems like Jira, GitLab and SonarQube.

Experience redesigning hiring processes or career frameworks for modern engineering roles.

Contributions to engineering communities of practice, internal talks or external thought leadership.

Experience in financial services and an understanding of the related regulatory requirements

All colleagues are expected to demonstrate the Barclays Values of Respect, Integrity, Service, Excellence and Stewardship, our moral compass, helping us do what we believe is right. They are also expected to demonstrate the Barclays Mindset to Empower, Challenge and Drive, the operating manual for how we behave.
