The company builds advanced defense systems and is in an early growth stage, moving quickly and looking to bring in a team that can turn ambitious ideas into working capability.
The EHS Engineer role is for Project Ranger, a manufacturing site in New Mexico. The site is moving from construction and commissioning into sustained manufacturing, so facilities, equipment, processes and requirements will keep changing.
This is a field-based role. You will spend much of your time where the work happens, working alongside operators, technicians, engineers, maintenance, facilities staff, construction partners and supervisors to find hazards, design practical controls and make sure EHS requirements are actually followed. A day might include an inspection, an equipment design review, a PHA, an incident investigation or coaching an employee.
Responsibilities
Give hands-on EHS support every day across construction, buildout, manufacturing, maintenance, facilities, engineering, commissioning and other operations, spending real time in operational areas.
Act as the go-to onsite EHS contact for employees, contractors and leadership. Resolve routine issues yourself, bring in specialists when needed and escalate serious risks.
Work with facilities, engineering, construction teams and contractors to find and control EHS risks from building work, equipment installation, infrastructure and site changes.
Take part in design reviews for facilities, equipment and processes, making sure EHS is built into procurement, installation and modifications before construction or startup.
Support new equipment, process changes, commissioning, turnover, pre-startup reviews and first-time operations so controls are in place before work starts.
Identify and assess hazards in workplaces, equipment, processes, chemicals, construction and operations, including machine guarding, hazardous energy, electrical, ergonomics, material handling and access and egress. Work with engineering and operations to build engineering, administrative and procedural controls.
Lead or support risk assessments such as JHAs, PHAs, What-If analyses, equipment and process reviews and operational readiness assessments for new, changed and higher-risk work.
Support Management of Change so that changes to equipment, processes, facilities, materials, procedures or operating conditions are assessed before they are made.
Create and keep improving site EHS SOPs, programs, policies, JHAs, work instructions and inspection tools, drawing on regulations, operational needs, risk assessments and lessons learned.
Build and deliver EHS training for employees, contractors, technicians, engineers, supervisors and managers. Roll out new programs with affected teams, check that requirements are workable and reinforce them through field coaching.
Run and maintain core site programs: LOTO, machine safety, PPE, respiratory protection, hazard communication, electrical safety, hot work, fall protection, confined space, material handling, contractor safety and emergency preparedness and response.
Carry out regular field inspections and walkdowns to confirm controls work and spot new risks. Track findings and corrective actions, help teams rank them and see them closed out.
Lead or support incident and near-miss investigations. Find root causes and contributing factors, set corrective actions, share lessons learned and confirm the fixes work.
Support industrial hygiene work, including exposure assessments, sampling, reviewing results and putting exposure controls in place.
Handle day-to-day environmental compliance, including hazardous waste, chemical inventories, spill prevention and response, inspections and required records.
Support operations with energetic materials and explosives by assessing operational hazards and working with the Site EHS Manager and the Energetics Safety Manager to apply explosives-safety requirements and established controls. Keep enough working knowledge of DoD Manual 4145.26 to spot applicable requirements and possible compliance gaps.
Help the site meet applicable ATF explosives requirements, covering routine inspections, explosives storage and inventory control, required records and corrective actions, in coordination with the EHS Site Manager and EHS leadership.
Work with the company EHS staff at other locations to share procedures, tools, training and lessons learned, while allowing for site-specific needs.
Requirements
A bachelor's degree in engineering, occupational safety, environmental health and safety, industrial hygiene, environmental science or a related technical field.
At least 5 years of EHS, safety engineering, manufacturing safety, process safety or related experience in aerospace, defense, chemical processing, advanced manufacturing or another industrial setting.
Working knowledge of OSHA requirements and common industrial EHS programs.
Working knowledge of DoD Manual 4145.26 and how it applies to ammunition, explosives or energetic materials.
Proven experience building and rolling out EHS programs, SOPs and training, from writing a requirement or identified risk through stakeholder input, field implementation and checking that it works.
Experience running hazard assessments, inspections, incident investigations and corrective-action management, using structured methods such as JHA, PHA, What-If or FMEA.
Experience supporting new equipment installs, facility changes, commissioning, startup or operational readiness.
Ability to read equipment specifications, process documents, engineering drawings, P&IDs, SDSs and operating procedures, and to turn hazards and regulations into practical controls for manufacturing processes and equipment.
Proven ability to work in a startup or fast-growing environment with incomplete information and competing priorities.
Strong problem-solving, organization, written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work well with operators, technicians, engineers, maintenance staff, contractors and leadership.
Comfortable spending long periods in manufacturing, commissioning and outdoor operating areas.
Ability to work full-time onsite at Project Ranger in New Mexico and to support operations outside normal business hours when required.
Ability to meet U.S. export-control requirements (ITAR or EAR).
Preferred: experience in aerospace, defense, energetic materials, chemical processing, propulsion or other high-hazard manufacturing.
Preferred: experience supporting energetic-material processing, mix/cast, propulsion manufacturing or test operations.
Preferred: experience taking a facility through construction, buildout, design reviews, commissioning, startup and production ramp-up, working with construction contractors, facilities, engineering and equipment vendors.
Preferred: experience with Management of Change, Pre-Startup Safety Reviews or similar readiness processes.
Preferred: experience with machine safety, equipment safeguarding, hazardous-energy control and engineering controls.
Preferred: familiarity with ATF explosives requirements and applicable NFPA standards.
Preferred: experience with industrial hygiene, hazardous materials, hazardous waste, environmental compliance and emergency preparedness and response programs.
Preferred: OSHA 30, HAZWOPER, ASP, CSP or similar training or professional certification.
