Distinguished Software Engineer

The role sits on the Video team, which builds the backend for large-scale video streaming and recording. The team is looking for a Distinguished Software Engineer to design, build, maintain and own software.

The stack includes Go, C, TypeScript, AWS, Kubernetes, SQS, SNS, ffmpeg and WebRTC. The team's key pillars are reliability, simplicity and performance.

The team works hybrid: two core in-person days in the office, typically Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, with the rest of the week spent wherever you choose.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain the cloud systems that let customers view and control their home security cameras from anywhere.
• Work with internal stakeholders to pin down requirements and design solutions that are simple, reliable and flexible.
• Drive delivery by writing code yourself and supporting other engineers through code reviews and mentoring.
• Handle long-term support work, including performance tuning, bug fixes, new features, design and usability improvements, and automation.
• Write documentation so the systems you build can be maintained by future developers.
• Act as the first responder on call for software your team owns.
• Bring your video expertise to improve the company's video services.

Requirements

• 10+ years of industry experience, including owning the architecture of a production backend system from design through long-term operation.
• 4+ years designing, building or running a real-time or low-latency video streaming service, such as HLS or DASH delivery.
• Experience architecting cloud video storage at scale, including cost-efficient storage tiers, lifecycle and archival policies, and retention strategies that work across millions of recording devices.
• Experience designing metadata and indexing for video so recorded clips can be retrieved and scrubbed quickly by camera, timestamp or event across large datasets.
• Deep hands-on knowledge of HLS, DASH, fragmented MP4 (fmp4), H.264 and AAC.
• Familiarity with streaming standards such as adaptive bitrate packaging, video codecs (HEVC, AV1) and transport protocols (SRT, RTMP, WHIP, MoQ).
• Experience with WebRTC, GStreamer, ffmpeg or libav.
• Proven ability to mentor engineers and lead technical decisions within a team.
• Proficiency in at least one major programming language, such as Go, C, JavaScript/TypeScript or Java.
• Extensive experience with AWS, GCP or Azure.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a track record of breaking down complex problems.
• A drive to keep learning and growing.
• Familiarity with the Agile Scrum process.
• Experience with IoT or smart home video streaming is a plus.
