Description

The company brings clinical research and health services to communities that often face barriers to care, using hundreds of research locations, mobile clinics and clinicians worldwide.

Its programs include Future of Medicine, which offers advanced health screenings and research opportunities to communities worldwide, and Difference Makers, which supports local leaders in expanding community health and wellbeing efforts.

This role leads the engineering organization building the AI Patient Engagement Agent, a voice- and messaging-capable AI agent that handles standardized patient interactions, drives recruitment, manages appointments and automates prescreening outreach at global scale.

The team's aim is to remove operational friction so clinical research staff, who now spend many hours on manual, repetitive administrative work such as chasing calls, answering basic questions, coordinating schedules and running routine prescreening surveys, can spend that time on patient care and medical decisions.

You are an experienced leader with a SaaS product background who was once a developer and can hold technical discussions without writing code daily. You lead with a servant-leadership approach, are a strong collaborator and communicator, and enjoy learning new technical approaches.

This is a hybrid role open only to candidates in Boston, MA, with one day per week in the Boston office.

Responsibilities

  • Build configurable, script-driven conversation engines that can be adapted across different clinical trials and patient needs while steering users toward their goals.
  • Design a resilient task engine that balances patient safe-call windows, local time zones, call-center hours, outcome tracking and adaptive retry rules to maximise reach within strict best practices.
  • Own delivery of the AI Patient Engagement engineering roadmap, working with Product and Design to turn complex trial protocols into intuitive AI workflows and reliable software.
  • Take part in architecture reviews for real-time voice, messaging, workflow orchestration and data pipelines, ensuring a resilient, highly available platform that scales without accumulating technical debt.
  • Balance feature work with platform stability, managing capacity, resource allocation and technical debt so patient outreach stays on schedule.
  • Refine agile ceremonies and CI/CD practices to remove blockers and keep shipping fast.
  • Manage, mentor and grow Engineering Managers and Tech Leads, hold regular 1-on-1s, plan career paths and recruit strong engineers.
  • Build an inclusive, high-accountability team that stays aligned and motivated by the healthcare impact of its work.
  • Act as the technical contact across departments, turning AI, telemetry and platform topics into clear updates for executives and non-technical partners.

Requirements

  • Experience as a manager of managers, coaching and developing Engineering Managers and Technical Leads.
  • Solid background in scalable cloud architecture, event-driven systems, API-first SaaS platforms or workflow automation.
  • A record of shipping complex, data-intensive or automation-heavy products on time.
  • Deep working knowledge of Agile/Scrum, sprint planning and modern CI/CD.
  • Active involvement in design reviews to protect platform durability, security and scalability.
  • Clear communication of technical strategy, risks and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders and leadership.
  • A bachelor's degree (BA or BS).
  • At least 7 years of software engineering experience, including at least 3 years managing engineering teams.
  • Preferred: experience with or strong interest in conversational systems, telephony (voice or SMS integrations) or AI/automation workflows.
  • Preferred: experience in HealthTech, Biotech, Clinical Trials, Life Sciences or another highly regulated field with strict data privacy rules.
