Description

This vice president level role suits a strategic professional who tracks developments in their field and shapes direction by weighing how those changes apply to their own work and to the business. You are the go-to technical authority for one area of the business and need a basic grasp of commercial matters.

Several people in the business hold the same depth of expertise, so you will need strong communication and tact to steer, sway and win over colleagues in other teams and, now and then, outside customers. Your work carries weight because the deliverables are complex, and your advice on technology and operations shapes an entire area and, over time, the performance of the wider sub-function or job family.

Responsibilities

  • Drive results on large programs or several smaller ones, and act as development lead on most medium and large projects. Bring deep knowledge of methods and standards for analysis, design, coding, testing, debugging and rollout.
  • Understand the client's core business functions well.
  • Take part in end user consultations to pin down system function requirements and fold them into the overall design and delivery. Apply broad knowledge across several technology areas to reach technical goals.
  • Work largely on your own, with little or no oversight from senior developers. Your decisions have a measurable effect on the client's business goals. In team discussions, work with TPMs and engineering managers to spot schedule risks.
  • Help plan and run application development work, often involving large budgets, cross-functional efforts or several projects at once. Assess technical and business risks and their effects, and pass them to business owners so they can decide with full information.
  • Guide architecturally significant work during preplanning, and make sure principles and best practices are in place before any work starts. Keep an eye on Digital roadmaps and how they affect upcoming journeys.
  • Publish design review extensions and written guidance that fits sprint plans and timelines.
  • Sit on the design review board, looking at the design process, spotting recurring patterns and sharing best practices across the organization.
  • Publish design patterns that apply across lines of business and shared domains. Lead design reviews for Next Gen Architecture (NGA) and Plan of Record (POR) projects, applying sound design principles and best practices.
  • Take part in microservices and NGA code reviews.
  • Mentor and coach SDEs and their teams.
  • Know the business domain, its systems and its products thoroughly, including who owns what, their limits, scale factors and why past architecture decisions were made.
  • Take a long-term view of business and technology choices, and use technical judgment to check architecture where needed.
  • Direct teams to build systems that use hardware, runtime, memory and load resources efficiently.
  • Make broader design decisions and set long-term strategy that shapes development process and standards.
  • Own design reviews for Agile and POR projects and code reviews for NGA projects. Explain, promote and communicate design patterns for NGA architectures and solutions.
  • Give architectural guidance to SDEs in line with best practices, the CTO guidelines and the platform.
  • Create clarity and work with full independence where business or technical strategy has not been defined.
  • Provide architectural guidance, and run design and code reviews for the projects assigned to your LOB. Product definition and technical planning are outside your scope.
  • Own the overall strategy and drive teams inside and outside your organization to deliver expected results. Lead discussions with business and technical stakeholders to reach timely decisions. Weigh trade-offs between effort, timelines, features and technical constraints. Remove blockers and find a way forward in hard situations.
  • Build plans with a clear route to delivery. Resolve dependencies between Agile and waterfall work. Help teams organize for delivery and use resources well for the wider Digital organization. Apply engineering best practices across the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Own design reviews for the company's Agile and POR projects and code reviews for NGA projects. Give architectural guidance to SDEs in line with best practices, the CTO guidelines and the platform. Explain, promote and communicate design patterns for NGA architectures and solutions.
  • Produce clear metrics on design reviews, code reviews, CI/CD and adoption of design patterns.
  • Report progress, anticipate bottlenecks, manage escalations, and identify, assess, track and reduce issues and risks at several levels. Spot disagreement and work through it constructively.
  • Keep improving processes and bring in new technology. Show influence in scrum teams beyond your own area.
  • Weigh risk in business decisions with close attention to the firm's reputation and the protection of the company, its clients and its assets. Drive compliance with laws, rules, regulations and internal policy, use sound ethical judgment, and escalate and report control issues openly.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of relevant experience in an Apps Development role, or senior experience in an Enterprise Architecture role, and subject matter expertise in one or more areas.
  • Broad technology expertise, including the patterns and techniques that apply to the company's internal and external cloud platforms (AWS, OSE, Akamai).
  • Advanced knowledge of algorithms, data structures, distributed systems and networking. You will use it to lead people, design architecture and drive wider adoption as a functional subject matter expert across the company.
  • Build relevant technology and financial industry skills (AWS PWS), and understand every aspect of NGA technology, including new approaches and opportunities.
  • Knowledge of automating code quality checks, code performance, unit testing and build processing in CI/CD.
  • Bachelor's or university degree required. Master's degree preferred, or equivalent experience.
