Description

This is a lead analyst role in the Digital Software Engineering job family within the Technology group, based in Irving, Texas, United States.

You are a recognised technical authority for your area. You keep up with developments in your field and help shape direction by judging how they apply to your own work and the wider business.

Basic commercial awareness is expected. Several people in the business offer the same level of subject matter expertise, so your value comes from how well you guide, influence and persuade colleagues in other areas and, occasionally, external customers.

Your work shapes an entire area through complex deliverables and feeds into the performance and effectiveness of the wider sub-function or job family.

The company is a large financial institution. This role covers architecture and delivery for Wealth Management and Banking technology.

Responsibilities

  • Lead execution and results on large efforts or several smaller ones, and act as development lead on most medium and large projects, applying standard methods and practices for analysis, design, coding, testing, debugging and release.
  • Build a solid understanding of the client's core business functions.
  • Take part in end user consultations to define system functions, then fold those into the overall design and delivery. Use your knowledge across several technology areas to reach technical goals.
  • Work independently with little guidance from senior developers. Your decisions will have a measurable effect on the client organisation's business goals. In team discussions, work with TPMs and engineering managers to identify schedule risks.
  • Help plan and manage application development work, often involving large budgets, cross-functional efforts or multiple projects. Analyse technical and business risks and their impact, and communicate them to business owners so they can decide with full information.
  • Before work starts, guide architecturally significant efforts during pre-planning and confirm principles and best practices are followed. Track Digital roadmaps and how they affect upcoming customer journeys.
  • Publish design review extensions and written guidance that matches sprint plans and timelines.
  • Sit on the design review board, which looks at the design process, identifies common patterns and shares best practice across the organisation.
  • Publish design patterns that apply across lines of business and shared domains. Lead design reviews for Next Gen Architecture (NGA) and Plan of Record (POR) projects, applying design principles and best practices.
  • Take part in microservice and NGA code reviews.
  • Mentor and coach SDEs and their teams.
  • Understand the business domain, systems and products in your area well, including their responsibilities, limits, scale factors and the reasons behind architectural choices.
  • Think long term about business and technology choices, and use technical judgement to check architecture where needed.
  • Direct teams to build and run systems that use hardware, runtime, memory and load resources efficiently.
  • Make broader design decisions and set long-term strategy that shapes development process and standards.
  • Own design reviews for Agile and POR projects and code reviews for NGA projects. Explain and promote design patterns for NGA architectures and solutions.
  • Give architectural guidance to SDEs based on best practice and in line with CTO guidelines and the platform.
  • Create clarity and work fully independently where business or technical strategy has not been defined.
  • Provide architectural guidance and run design and code reviews for projects assigned to your line of business. Product definition and technical planning are outside this role.
  • Own the overall strategy and drive teams inside and outside your organisation to deliver. Lead discussions with business and technical stakeholders to reach timely decisions. Weigh trade-offs between effort, timelines, features and technical limits. Remove blockers and find a way forward when situations are difficult.
  • Build plans with a clear route to delivery. Resolve dependencies between Agile and waterfall work, and help teams organise to make the best use of resources across Digital. Apply engineering best practice across the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Own design reviews for the company Agile and POR projects and code reviews for NGA projects. Give architectural guidance to SDEs in line with CTO guidelines and the platform. Explain and promote design patterns for NGA architectures.
  • Produce and present clear metrics on design reviews, code reviews, CI/CD and adoption of design patterns.
  • Share progress, spot bottlenecks early, manage escalations, and identify, assess, track and reduce issues and risks at every level. Notice disagreement and engage in constructive dialogue to settle it.
  • Drive continuous improvement and adoption of new technology. Show influence in scrum teams beyond your own area.
  • When making business decisions, assess risk carefully, with attention to the firm's reputation and the protection of the company, its clients and assets. Promote compliance with laws, rules, regulations and internal policy, use sound ethical judgement, and escalate and report control issues openly.

  • Recommended: 6-10 years of relevant experience.
  • Recommended: Expertise across technology, including broader patterns and techniques for the company's internal and external cloud platforms (AWS, PCF, Akamai).
