Description

The company is the largest municipal sanitation agency in the country, with nearly 10,000 employees, 59 district garages, and a fleet of more than 5,000 trucks, cars, and other equipment.

Its work covers collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning city streets and vacant lots, removing abandoned vehicles, and clearing snow and ice from about 6,500 miles of streets.

The company's IT bureau is adding a DevOps Engineer to work alongside the current team on dedicated, scheduled off-hours support.

The role keeps critical agency applications such as SMART, NOVAS, and MIMS secure, stable, and highly available, mainly through routine Linux patching, security fixes, and infrastructure upgrades.

Responsibilities

  • Apply monthly security patches, OS updates, and vulnerability fixes to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and later systems.
  • Track security advisories, new threats, and known vulnerabilities, judge how exposed the infrastructure is, and propose proactive patching and fixes.
  • Maintain, update, and upgrade core platform tools: Jenkins, Elasticsearch, Rancher, and RabbitMQ.
  • Run and update the Rancher/Kubernetes platform, keeping clusters secure, fast, and highly available.
  • Carry out scheduled maintenance and upgrades in designated off-hours windows so peak-hour service is not disrupted.
  • Act as the main technical responder on off-hours shifts for outages and infrastructure faults, leading root-cause analysis, fixes, and service recovery.

Requirements

  • Hold a permanent Certified IT Administrator (LAN/WAN) title or have passed exam 1111. People serving in a similar title may apply.
  • Hold a professional or vendor certification in local area network administration, which is required for the post.
  • Bring strong hands-on Linux system administration experience, particularly with RHEL 8 or later, and containerization experience with Rancher/Kubernetes.
  • Either hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college plus two years of full-time, non-classroom experience in LAN and/or WAN planning, design, configuration, installation, troubleshooting, performance monitoring, maintenance, and security management.
  • Or hold a four-year high school diploma or equivalent plus six years of full-time, non-classroom IT experience, at least two of them in the LAN/WAN work described above.
  • Or combine education and experience equivalent to either route. 30 undergraduate semester credits from an accredited college count as 6 months of experience, and a master's degree in computer science or a related field from an accredited college counts as one year.
  • Whichever route you take, you need at least one year of full-time, non-classroom IT experience in the LAN/WAN work described above.
  • You may be required to update existing certifications or earn new industry-standard ones for the current and future technical environments you are assigned to, as the agency decides.

Conditions

The work is scheduled off-hours support, with maintenance carried out in set off-hours windows.

The company is an equal opportunity employer that welcomes a diverse workforce and prohibits discrimination and harassment based on legally protected status.
