Description

The company builds superconducting quantum computers and the full-stack software that runs them, including a multi-chip quantum processor and a distributed system for hybrid quantum-classical computing.

This role owns deployment of the company's quantum systems, both on-premises at research institutions and partner sites worldwide and on the cloud platform. You are the technical contact for each deployment, from site requirements through installation, validation and handoff. You work with Engineering Operations, Quantum Engineers and other customer-facing teams on infrastructure and IT work, and over time you take on more of the core infrastructure and IT systems.

It is a build role as well as an operate role. The first several deployments are done, and more systems are going to sites in the UK and Asia within the next year. You will turn those lessons into a repeatable, documented process and attend critical installations on site.

You will work in the Infrastructure team on DevOps tasks such as CI/CD, AWS and on-prem servers. You will deal directly with customers and partners, gathering site requirements, setting expectations and driving issues to resolution, while working with internal teams to decide what gets built next. You will be on call during installations to keep the infrastructure stable.

The ideal candidate has deep hands-on DevOps, cloud infrastructure, and networking experience, plus modern deployment practice, and has deployed systems into physical environments they do not fully control, such as customer sites, labs, data centers or the field. Experience with site reliability and observability is a strong plus. Automation and application development experience helps but is not required. No quantum background is needed, though curiosity about the technology is welcome.

Responsibilities

  • Own the deployment process for the quantum systems on on-premises and cloud platforms, including on-site installation and commissioning at customer and partner locations.
  • Build, tune and deploy the infrastructure the quantum systems depend on, and support and validate each deployment.
  • Be the main technical contact for customers during deployment. Capture site requirements, expose hidden assumptions early and push issues through to resolution across company teams.
  • Work with Quantum Engineers and Engineering Operations to test, validate and measure deployed systems, including the control systems that sit beside each dilution refrigerator.
  • Propose and build improvements to cloud and on-prem infrastructure and to the deployment process.
  • Run retrospectives on finished deployments and move the lessons into the standard process.
  • Provide site reliability support and lead root-cause analysis for incidents during and after deployment.
  • Work with Engineering Operations to build observability and reliability across the company's systems.
  • Work with internal software engineers to develop, maintain and improve deployment testing.
  • Build and maintain test and staging environments that match customer deployments.
  • Write standard operating procedures for deployment, site reliability and testing so every team follows the same workflow.
  • Stretch responsibilities: help improve the core infrastructure and IT systems, manage role-based access control and access requests, and help define what customers receive with a deployment, including scope, support model and escalation paths.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or computer engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in DevOps, cloud, site reliability, field or deployment engineering, or HPC or research computing operations.
  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes and scaling tools such as Karpenter and EKS.
  • 3-5 years of experience with AWS or a similar cloud provider.
  • 3-5 years of experience running Linux servers.
  • 1-2 years of experience with Terraform or similar infrastructure as code tools.
  • 1-2 years of experience with observability tools such as Grafana Cloud, Prometheus and Sentry.
  • Significant experience debugging production environments and resolving incidents.
  • On-call experience supporting production applications, deployments or devices.
  • Hands-on experience deploying to production, including deployment strategies for physical customer, lab or field environments.
  • Experience working directly with customers or external partners in a technical role.
  • Willing to travel internationally for installations and onboarding, including extended site visits.
  • Preferred: CCNA, CompTIA Network+, AWS certification or equivalent practical experience.
  • Preferred: experience with load balancers, firewalls, VPNs, wireless networks and network monitoring tools.
  • Preferred: experience building or maintaining end-to-end CI/CD pipelines, beyond basic familiarity.
  • Preferred: experience in a data center, lab, manufacturing, semiconductor, research or cleanroom environment.
  • Preferred: bare metal provisioning on Windows and Linux devices.
  • Preferred: experience installing or supporting scientific instruments, HPC systems or semiconductor equipment at customer sites.
  • Preferred: experience managing control or embedded hardware alongside the software that runs on it.
  • Preferred: background in quantum, physics or other deep-tech environments (a plus, not required).

Conditions

Travel internationally for installations and onboarding, including extended site visits.

On-call rotation during installations.
