Description

The company is a large US insurer with roots going back to 1848. Its AI Center of Excellence is applying machine learning, advanced analytics and generative AI to the business and to customer experience.

As a data science intern, you will join projects in that center. You will apply computer science and data science methods to real business problems, with work ranging from predictive models to testing generative AI tools.

The role blends traditional data science with newer AI technology, on a collaborative team. The company does not offer visa sponsorship for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Work mainly in the company's Databricks environment with AI and data science staff, technical specialists and business partners, building and testing data-driven solutions.
  • Prepare, explore and check datasets and features for life insurance and annuity work, such as surrender propensity, premium persistency and policyholder behaviour.
  • Help build and assess statistical and machine learning models against established baselines, and look into errors and limits.
  • Help design experiments and measure business results with fair comparisons, sound statistics and clear success measures.
  • Build reusable Python and SQL workflows with validation checks and documentation so others can review and reproduce your work.
  • Prototype and assess generative AI applications for output quality, source support, failure modes and practical value.
  • Handle sensitive data properly and check AI-generated output before relying on it.
  • Present findings and recommendations to both technical and business audiences.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's programme in computer science, data science, mathematics, statistics or a related field.
  • Strong Python skills, including data analysis or machine learning libraries such as pandas and scikit-learn.
  • Working SQL knowledge, including querying, joining and aggregating data to prepare and check datasets.
  • Understanding of core statistics and machine learning concepts: regression, classification, model evaluation and hypothesis testing.
  • Curiosity about how modern AI and foundational statistical methods are used in practice.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
  • Experience with Apache Spark, PyTorch or TensorFlow is a plus.
  • Coursework or projects that integrated generative AI APIs into software is a plus.
  • All associates are expected to use approved AI tools where suitable, review and validate AI-generated content, apply the company's AI guiding principles, and follow its policies on confidentiality, privacy, security, compliance, retention and intellectual property.
  • Interns should be reliable and engaged, bring a service mindset, communicate across technical and non-technical groups, think critically and solve problems, and learn quickly by asking questions and seeking feedback.

Conditions

Paid 10-week internship running June 1 to August 6.

Hourly pay range is $19 to $28 USD.
