Description

The company's Space Sector is hiring junior and mid-level engineers with a background in guidance, navigation and controls (GNC) to join its teams in Dulles, Virginia; Gilbert and Chandler, Arizona; and Redondo Beach, California.

This is not an open requisition. The company keeps these profiles on file to match skilled candidates with roles that come up often, and candidates who express interest may be considered for future openings.

Help with relocating may be on offer.

Responsibilities

  • Design and analyze relative guidance solutions for rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO).
  • Design, analyze and tune sequential filters, such as Kalman filters, for attitude determination and relative navigation.
  • Analyze and test spacecraft GNC subsystem performance using simulations and other analytic tools.
  • Build simulation models of sensors (star tracker, rate gyro, accelerometer, GPS, magnetometer, sun sensors), actuators (reaction wheel, torque bar, thruster, CMG), system dynamics (rigid body, multi-body, orbit mechanics, flexible models, propellant slosh) and the space environment (atmosphere, solar radiation pressure, third-body gravity, geopotential).
  • Develop and validate high-fidelity 3 DOF and 6 DOF models and simulations of attitude, ephemeris and line-of-sight dynamics.
  • Design, implement and verify GNC algorithms, including trackers, filters and controllers.
  • Build, test and integrate software and simulation tools that keep space vehicle and payload GNC reliable through flight operations.
  • Design, develop, implement, verify and test high-quality software and simulation toolchains.
  • Work on 6DoF simulations to design and test missile flight code, and use 6DoF models to evaluate system performance.
  • Apply engineering principles, industry standards, company process, and knowledge of vehicle dynamics, aerodynamics, propulsion, classical and modern control, and estimation theory to meet advanced program and project goals.

Requirements

  • Degree and experience, depending on level: Level 1 needs a bachelor's degree and 1 year of professional experience; Level 2 needs a bachelor's degree and 2 years, or a master's degree and 1 year; Level 3 needs a bachelor's degree and 5 years, a master's degree and 3 years, or a PhD and 1 year; Level 4 needs a bachelor's degree and 8 years, a master's degree and 6 years, or a PhD and 4 years.
  • Active U.S. Government Secret or Top Secret security clearance at the time of application, current and within scope.
  • Directly related guidance, navigation and control (GNC) experience.
  • Experience with missile flight dynamics, autopilot and guidance design, and implementing them in missile flight code.
  • Experience with trajectory optimization software and tools.

Conditions

Work is 100% on-site; telecommuting is not an option.

Travel is required for about 10% of the time.

The role depends on obtaining final clearances and program access within a period the company considers reasonable.

Secret clearance is required to start.

The posted salary range of $65,800.00 to $98,800.00 is a general guideline for the primary level. Final base pay depends on scope, responsibilities, experience, education, skills and market conditions.

The application window is estimated at 20 days from the posting date, and it may be shortened or extended based on business needs and candidate availability.

Benefits

  • Depending on the position, overtime pay, shift differential and a discretionary bonus may apply on top of base pay.
  • Annual bonuses reward individual contributions and let employees share in company results.
  • Vice President and Director roles may be eligible for long-term incentives.
  • Health insurance, life and disability insurance, a savings plan, paid company holidays, and paid time off for vacation and personal business.
