Associate Scientific Editor

Description

The STMJ (Science, Technology, and Medical Journals) team publishes peer-reviewed research across scientific and medical fields. The team works with authors, editors, reviewers and societies to protect the integrity and impact of published work, and it improves editorial workflows and publishing technology so research communities can find and share knowledge.

This role sits in the Author Heroes team. You will help authors work through the publishing process and find the journal that best fits their research. You will use your scientific knowledge, editorial judgement and communication skills to support authors, improve editorial processes and help publish high-quality science.

Responsibilities

• Assess submitted content alongside external editors
• Refine editorial processes for editors and reviewers over time
• Work closely with authors to strengthen their manuscripts
• Run each paper through the editorial process, from submission and peer review to the final decision
• Advise authors whose work was rejected by their first-choice journal on how to improve their chances at another journal
• Recruit external editors and manage them to the same standard as internal staff
• Key questions when evaluating content: Does the submission fit the journal's aims and scope? Does the science hold up? Do the results back the conclusions? Was the method suitable? Is the manuscript good enough? Is this the right journal, or would revisions help it succeed elsewhere?
• Editors give authors guidance and make sure the submission experience runs smoothly

Requirements

• Write and speak professional-level English
• Bring an experimental, results-focused and keen approach to work
• Have a track record of publishing papers in scientific journals
• Be comfortable with technology, including online platforms, social media and digital content
• Communicate well, with excellent written and spoken English
• Build relationships on your own initiative, connecting with the scientific community and colleagues at different levels across a large international organisation
• Have broad scientific interest and a commitment to helping customers in the scientific and clinical community, including authors, editors and reviewers
