Description

The role is permanent and reports to the Lead Analytics Engineer.

You will design and maintain trusted, reusable analytical assets that give reliable information for reporting, analysis and decisions. You will work with business stakeholders and technical colleagues to turn business problems into data-driven solutions, owning projects from discovery through to production support.

You will join the Group Data Engineering team's analytics specialists, a data community that is growing quickly and has access to current technologies.

The company is an international specialist insurer, focused on a selected set of areas of expertise rather than mass market products. It was founded in 1901, works in a culture that questions convention, and sets out to do things differently. Insurance is the business, but the team works to keep it engaging.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain reusable analytical data models and curated datasets using dimensional and other suitable modelling methods.
  • Create data pipelines, reports and dashboards that give decision-ready information you can rely on.
  • Keep analytical data products accurate, complete and dependable.
  • Own the design, build and delivery of dashboards, visualisations and reports as an internal consultant.
  • Work with stakeholders to define and maintain governed business metrics and semantic models so definitions stay consistent across reports and products.
  • Optimise models, transformations and queries for speed, scale and cost.
  • Use Git and CI/CD to develop, test and release analytics code through controlled environments.
  • Document models, data assets, metadata, business definitions, lineage, ownership, access controls and operational processes.
  • Gather requirements from stakeholders, including user stories, acceptance criteria, functional and non-functional specifications and business cases.
  • Assess potential solutions for technical and business fit.
  • Build working relationships with business stakeholders, IT teams and external third parties.
  • Support the administration, security and upkeep of analytics solutions.
  • Provide day-to-day support to the business, including training and mentoring colleagues.
  • Promote analytics best practice across the Group.

Requirements

  • 5+ years in a business intelligence, data engineering, data analysis or data visualisation role.
  • Deep experience with modern analytics and BI platforms, ideally Power BI or Fabric, with Tableau, Qlik or Looker also welcome.
  • Deep experience with cloud data platforms, ideally Microsoft Fabric, Databricks or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Advanced T-SQL.
  • Experience with Python.
  • Experience with Git-based workflows, including branching, pull requests, peer review and automated deployment pipelines.
  • Strong grasp of data visualisation best practice and a real interest in it.
  • Strong understanding of data modelling concepts.
  • Ability to influence stakeholders and build credibility.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, adapting to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Creative, proactive, logical and inventive, with a commitment to quality, service and personal ownership.
  • Able to analyse business problems and turn them into data-driven solutions.
  • Able to set priorities and meet deadlines in a changing environment, with the drive to succeed in a fast-paced setting.
  • Curious about both data and the business, and committed to continuous learning.
  • Desirable: certification from an analytics technology vendor.
  • Desirable: insurance or financial services experience.
  • Desirable: a degree in science, computer science, mathematics or a similar quantitative subject.

Conditions

You will work in a team of analytics specialists covering data visualisation, analytics platforms and data engineering, within the wider Group Data Engineering team, all working toward delivering data-driven insight to business stakeholders.

The Technology organisation has a Corporate Centre team and five business-aligned teams.
