Description

The company is hiring a mid-level or senior airworthiness and regulatory engineer (Level 3 or Level 4) for its Regulatory Administration and Airworthiness group in North Charleston, South Carolina.

The role suits people who want to move up in aviation regulation and safety, who are eager to improve certification systems and find efficiencies, and who do well with a high degree of independence.

The team works autonomously and values new ideas. Daily work involves investigating issues, building action plans, analysing data and designing system-level fixes in a busy, high-visibility setting.

The ideal candidate is a strong individual contributor building toward lead experience, or a current team lead who wants wider exposure by working with regulators around the world on commercial aviation.

The team is recruiting at several experience levels for this engineering role.

Responsibilities

  • Give technical advice and training on complex safety and airworthiness questions.
  • Work through regulatory processes to find workable answers to hard problems, supporting every airplane program.
  • Work with engineering, project administrators and regulators, including international regulators and validation authorities, to certify projects for commercial aircraft production.
  • Review certification plans, write letters to regulators and understand the compliance process.
  • Lead and facilitate discussions with the FAA, foreign regulatory agencies and airplane program leaders.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to resolve technical issues.
  • Coordinate technical communication and work with the FAA on regulatory matters.
  • Own and manage process and procedure documents such as BPMs, BPIs, D6s and D950s, and build the technical skill to carry them out.
  • Make sure work is coordinated across products, platforms and functions, so that compliance with requirements and FAA guidance is applied consistently.
  • Build strategic action plans to change certification processes and carry them through to completion.
  • Contribute to root cause corrective action plans covering noncompliances, voluntary disclosures, informal and formal corrective actions. This includes reviewing processes, design practices and analysis, running root cause analysis, and identifying and owning corrective actions and their plans.

Requirements

  • Required: a Bachelor of Science in engineering, engineering technology (including manufacturing technology), data science, mathematics, physics or chemistry.
  • Required: 5+ years of direct work with the FAA and/or an ODA on Type Certification projects.
  • Required: 5+ years developing, contributing to or maintaining processes, policies and procedures.
  • Preferred: 9+ years of engineering work experience, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
  • Preferred: membership of an engineering unit or another FAA-delegated role.
  • Preferred: experience across the certification value stream.
  • Preferred: experience communicating verbally and in writing with varied audiences, including FAA representatives, ODA leadership, engineering unit members, project administrators, and program and functional leaders.
  • Preferred: experience coaching or teaching engineering unit members, design approval engineers, technical specialists and certification plan owners or authors on certification processes and tools.
  • Preferred: experience spotting how changes in certification requirements affect web applications.
  • Preferred: systems thinking, with the ability to build engineering proposals from data analysis and forecast wide-reaching, longer-term effects.
  • Preferred: experience building presentations and presenting to several levels of an organisation.
  • Preferred: experience investigating and solving complex technical or regulatory problems.
  • Preferred: experience balancing competing priorities.
