Description

A scientist role in the diseases of aging and regenerative medicine division, which works on finding new treatments for age-related disease. The work combines human genetics, long-term health records, multi-omics, imaging and functional biology with machine learning to explain how diseases develop and to pick and test therapeutic targets, with a focus on neurodegenerative and cardiovascular conditions.

Ageing is the largest single risk factor for long-term illness, so the team connects human disease biology, lab experiments and machine learning at scale.

You will work in a global, multidisciplinary group alongside biologists, disease specialists and data scientists. Together you will shape experiments, build scalable analysis pipelines and turn complex biomedical data into hypotheses that can be tested and evidence that informs drug discovery.

Internal title: Senior Expert I/II Data Science.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with lab scientists to clarify their biological questions and build data-driven methods to answer them.
  • Use computational biology, human genetics, and machine learning to identify, rank and validate targets for diseases of aging.
  • Help plan large experiments and data collection across genetics, multi-omics, imaging and functional biology.
  • Combine different biological datasets to reveal disease mechanisms and propose therapeutic hypotheses.
  • Build reproducible, scalable analysis workflows that speed up discovery across the division.

Requirements

  • Essential: a PhD in computational biology, human genetics, bioinformatics, data science, machine learning, systems biology or a closely related quantitative field.
  • Essential: 3+ years applying computational and machine learning methods in biomedical research, translational science or drug discovery.
  • Essential: hands-on experience modelling and analysing genetic, single-cell, perturbation, spatial transcriptomics and cellular imaging data.
  • Essential: experience assessing, adapting and applying biological foundation models to biomedical work, especially with RNA, DNA, single-cell or spatial data.
  • Essential: experience with model deployment (MLOps) and agentic frameworks, strong Python and R skills, and comfort working in modern data science environments to build reproducible workflows.
  • Essential: experience integrating complex biological data and turning it into practical insights.
  • Essential: ability to work well with experimental scientists.
  • Essential: clear curiosity, quick learning and willingness to work across disciplines.
  • Desirable: strong human genetics experience, including GWAS, rare variant analysis, Mendelian randomization, colocalization or fine mapping.
  • Desirable: real-world evidence work with longitudinal cohorts, EHRs and disease progression modelling.
  • Desirable: familiarity with biomedical knowledge graphs, representation learning or multimodal learning.
  • Desirable: familiarity with biomedical ontologies, FAIR data principles and data harmonisation.
  • Desirable: experience with biological aging clocks.
  • Skills listed for the role: artificial intelligence, biostatistics, change management, curious mindset, data governance, data literacy, data quality, data science, data visualisation, deep learning, graph algorithms, learning agility, machine learning, machine learning algorithms, Python, stakeholder engagement, statistical analysis, time series analysis.
