AI/ML Engineer Intern

Description

The Global Access, Value and Economics group at the company is hiring an AI/ML Engineer Intern for Summer 2027.

The group produces clinical evidence to support adoption of robotic-assisted surgery, and this role sits in its Global Access and Evidence Management Center of Excellence.

You will help build a system that makes evidence management and synthesis more efficient, including a tool that finds, deduplicates, validates and loads new publications about the company's products.

You will also help connect existing large language model pipelines to this system.

You will gain hands-on experience in software development, data management, machine learning and systems design, and you will work closely with stakeholders across several departments.

Responsibilities

• Design an end-to-end data pipeline for evidence management, synthesis and generation.
• Build and automate publication search and deduplication.
• Help add more large language model workflows to the system.
• Work with cross-functional stakeholders to build the solution.
• Present findings and explain their meaning to teams across the organization.

Requirements

• Be proficient in Python.
• Understand relational databases and SQL.
• Have a solid grasp of machine learning concepts and algorithms.
• Understand systems thinking and system design principles.
• Be currently enrolled in a Computer Science, Data Science, Computer Engineering or related Bachelor's or Master's program.
• Be enrolled in an accredited degree-seeking program and planning to return to it after the internship.
• Be available full-time (about 40 hours per week) for 10 to 12 weeks starting in May or June. Specific start dates are shared during recruiting.
• Experience with LLM APIs such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure OpenAI or similar, including prompt engineering and structured outputs, is a plus.
• Experience with agentic AI workflows is a plus.
• Experience building ETL or data ingestion pipelines for Snowflake is a plus.
• Experience with NLP methods such as vector embeddings and semantic similarity is a plus.
• Familiarity with R is a plus.
• Experience with scikit-learn is a plus.
• Familiarity with statistical methods, systematic literature reviews and meta-analysis is a plus.

Conditions

The role is remote or hybrid, with on-site meetings at least 3 times during the internship.

The company and its customers may require proof of current vaccination against certain diseases, including COVID-19, depending on the role.

Some roles may be subject to U.S. export controls, which can apply to nationals of countries under embargo or sanctions. Export licenses can take 3 to 6+ months, and a Technology Control Plan typically adds 2 weeks. Final offers for such roles depend on an approved license or executed plan before the start date.
