Description

This summer 2027 internship is with the AV systems, sensing and integration team, which builds, integrates and validates assisted and automated driving features.

The team takes features from early requirements and architecture through vehicle integration, calibration, validation and global launch.

The work combines sensor hardware, perception, software and vehicle systems engineering.

Roles sit in three areas: systems engineering, system integration, and automation plus simulation work.

Responsibilities

  • Set use cases, feature and sensing requirements, safety goals, performance targets and how subsystems interact.
  • Help shape system architecture, including interface definitions and functional models.
  • Work with platform and software teams to bring hardware and software subsystems together.
  • Write acceptance test plans that confirm open loop sensor performance.
  • Build dashboards, mine data and run analytics.
  • Script automated tests for in-vehicle and bench use.
  • Bring up functions and integrate systems on development vehicles.
  • Study how compute platforms, ECUs, sensors and actuators interact.
  • Run feature, sensor-level and full vehicle evaluations.
  • Develop calibrations in the vehicle and on the bench that meet performance and regulatory requirements.
  • Run performance and validation tests in simulation, on HIL and SIL benches, and on road fleets.
  • Record test results, summarize findings and help with root-cause investigations.
  • Use simulation, modeling and playback to reproduce field issues and speed up development.
  • Analyze system and sensor data to improve performance, robustness and validation efficiency.
  • Help build datasets, scenario libraries and automated test pipelines for HIL and SIL.

Requirements

  • Keen interest in hardware and system design, test automation, simulation, embedded systems, or adjacent areas.
  • A hands-on approach: you like building, testing, debugging and learning by doing.
  • Solid problem solving, careful attention to detail, and clear communication of findings.
  • Able to work well in a team and juggle several tasks toward a deliverable.
  • Working toward a bachelor's or master's in computer engineering, electrical, computer, mechatronics, system design, mechanical, chemical, or an equivalent field.
  • Coursework or project work in Python, MATLAB, or embedded microcontrollers.
  • Able to work full time, 40 hours per week.
  • Hold a valid driver's license.
  • Have transportation to reach the Milford Proving Grounds every day.
  • Preferred: basic understanding of automotive control systems, ADAS features, sensors or electronics.
  • Preferred: familiarity with model-based design tools such as MATLAB and Simulink, and with CAN, LIN and Ethernet protocols.
  • Preferred: proficiency in scripting languages such as Python.
  • Preferred: graduating between December 2027 and June 2028.
  • Preferred: intent to return to your degree program after the internship.

Conditions

Pay is $8,100 to $8,700 per month.

The role is on site in Milford, Michigan, five days a week.

Eligible students selected for the 2027 Student Program receive a one-time lump sum stipend, taxed as income.
