Description

The company's R&D group is hiring a summer 2027 intern to build practical AI and machine learning methods that speed up research, engineering and product work.

This role suits someone who has recently finished or is about to finish a PhD, has deep expertise in one or more advanced AI areas, and can work across fields.

You would turn engineering and science problems into proof-of-concepts, test them on meaningful problems, explain what you find, and work with senior researchers and engineering partners to bring promising ideas toward real use.

The team works on large language models, causal reasoning, neurosymbolic AI, world models, multimodal and generative AI, engineering agents and related areas, with a focus on rigor, originality and growth toward independent technical leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Pursue original research in one or more advanced AI areas such as causal AI, neurosymbolic AI, world models, multimodal or generative AI, or engineering agents.
  • Turn engineering and scientific challenges into clear research questions, hypotheses, algorithms and experiment plans.
  • Build, implement and test machine learning models and proof-of-concepts on real, simulated, experimental or engineering data.
  • Create methods that reason about physical systems, causality, uncertainty, constraints, change over time, or interactions between components.
  • Set up strong baselines and evaluation methods, and study failure modes, robustness, generalization, interpretability and uncertainty, not just headline accuracy.
  • Write reproducible research code, data pipelines and experiment workflows using modern deep learning tools.
  • Work with company researchers and engineers to understand domain limits, check results and find routes from proof-of-concept to practical use.
  • Share findings through reports, talks, papers, invention disclosures, demos and documentation.
  • Help shape technical discussions and roadmaps by spotting promising approaches, key risks and high-value experiments.

Requirements

  • Be currently enrolled in a PhD in computer science, AI, machine learning, applied mathematics, statistics, computational science, engineering, physics or a closely related field.
  • Show research depth in at least one relevant area through a dissertation, publications, patents, open-source work, research software or similar contributions.
  • Have solid grounding in machine learning and deep learning, plus working knowledge of optimization, probability and statistics, numerical methods or scientific computing as your area requires.
  • Have built and evaluated models in Python with frameworks such as PyTorch, JAX, TensorFlow or comparable tools.
  • Design experiments, choose suitable metrics and baselines, analyze results and state conclusions with the right caveats.
  • Communicate clearly in writing and speaking, and collaborate with researchers, engineers and technical stakeholders.
  • Be able to work on-site or in a hybrid setup, following company work practices and project needs.
  • Be curious and rigorous, comfortable moving between math, code and experiments, able to explain complex work to technical and general audiences, and independent while open to feedback.
  • Be committed to careful, reproducible, safe and responsible use of AI.
  • Preferred: research in causal inference, counterfactual reasoning, neurosymbolic methods or world models for engineering applications.
  • Preferred: experience with multimodal AI, large language models, agentic systems, retrieval and reasoning, or AI-assisted engineering and software development.
  • Preferred: evidence of research impact, such as strong publications, patents, invention disclosures, open-source contributions, awards or successful technology demonstrations.
  • Preferred: research or internship experience in automotive, mobility, aerospace, industrial, energy, defense, national laboratory or university-industry settings.

Conditions

Full-time, 40 hours per week during the summer months.

Hybrid role: report to the Mountain View, CA office at least three times per week, or as the business requires.

Start dates are May 24, 2027 and June 14, 2027.

Base salary range is $10,300 to $13,600 per month. This is a good-faith estimate under applicable state law, and the actual offer will vary with job-related factors and the candidate's geography.

No immigration sponsorship is provided, now or in the future. This includes company sponsorship, the company acting as employer of record on a government form, and any work authorization needing a written submission or other company support, such as H-1B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN or J-1. Do not apply if you will need any of these.

The role is subject to export control rules and requires U.S. person status: a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee or refugee.

Selected applicants may need to complete a role-related assessment and or pre-employment screening before starting.

The company does not allow unlawful discrimination and aims for an inclusive workplace.
