Description

The lab is hiring a Virtual Desktop Engineer or Desktop Engineer. You will work alongside the Desktop Services engineering team to run and support enterprise desktop management systems that support the lab's mission.

The role sits in the Information Technology Solutions Division (ITSD) within the Computing Directorate and supports the LivIT Program.

The job requires full-time presence on site because of the nature of the work.

The role will be filled at either level, based on knowledge and related experience as judged by the hiring team. If hired at the higher level, you will take on the additional responsibilities listed below.

Responsibilities

  • Recommend, justify and carry out improvements to operational service levels through an accepted change control method.
  • Talk directly with end users and work with the engineering team to find the root cause of reported problems.
  • Help engineering and management plan project milestones and team growth.
  • Create practical solutions and resolve problems quickly and proactively as part of a varied team.
  • Keep service levels on target and service reliability as high as possible.
  • Write and maintain support documentation and procedures.
  • Stay current on suitable technology, computer security and safety practices, and work as a good team member.
  • Guide and train junior operations staff in best practices and procedures.
  • Take on other duties as assigned.
  • At the 393.2 level, also: manage several complex tasks running in parallel and the priorities of customers and stakeholders, meeting deadlines while drawing on each team member's strengths.
  • At the 393.2 level, also: use tools and build procedures that improve Windows configuration management and automate complex tasks.

Requirements

  • You must be able to obtain and keep a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering or a related field, or an equivalent mix of education and related experience.
  • You must be proficient in supporting VDI environments. VMware Horizon experience is a plus.
  • You have worked effectively in a dynamic technical team with competing priorities.
  • You have strong experience with Active Directory Group Policy Objects (GPOs).
  • You have strong PowerShell scripting skills and have used them to automate Windows desktop administration, configuration, software deployment, troubleshooting, reporting or routine operational tasks.
  • You have broad experience with SCCM/MECM application deployment.
  • You communicate well in writing and speaking and build strong working relationships with all levels of management and staff, as well as outside vendors, contractors, service providers and consultants.
  • At the 393.2 level, also: you have substantial experience designing and running highly redundant, fault-tolerant enterprise Windows server environments.
  • At the 393.2 level, also: you apply new technologies and creative approaches to broadly defined tasks and projects at an advanced level.
  • At the 393.2 level, also: you can troubleshoot complex network environments.
  • At the 393.2 level, also: you have significant experience automating Windows desktop builds.
  • At the 393.2 level, also: you know how to administer and support thin clients.

Conditions

Salary at the 393.1 level: $125,310 to $153,444 per year.

Salary at the 393.2 level: $151,620 to $185,640 per year.

These are the lowest and highest salaries the company in good faith expects to pay for this role at the time of posting. Pay will never fall below any applicable local minimum wage. Where you sit in the range depends on factors such as specific competencies, education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance and business needs.

This is a career indefinite position open to lab employees and external candidates. It is on site.

A DOE Q-level clearance is required. If selected, a federal background investigation will be started to determine eligibility for access to classified information or matter. All L and Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.

External candidates selected must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test, which includes testing for marijuana because federal law applies as the lab is a federal contractor.

Depending on the job, you may need to work in a Limited Area, where personal and lab mobile devices, including phones, tablets, fitness trackers, wireless headphones and other Bluetooth or wireless devices, are not allowed. If you use a medical device that pairs with a mobile device, the mobile device rules still apply. Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities need separate approval. Hearing aids without wireless, or with wireless disabled, are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space.

Be wary of recruitment scams that use the lab's name. The lab never makes an offer without a personal interview and never charges a fee to join. All current openings are listed under 'Find Your Job' on the Career Page. If a posting or offer seems fraudulent, do not respond.
