Description

The role supports the Case Management Modernization (CMM) Program, which helps the Administrative Office of the US Courts build a modern cloud-based system for all 204+ federal courts across the United States.

The team is part of the CMM Data Modernization and Governance group, delivering data-driven decision-support tools that must meet strict federal compliance rules.

You will shape user-centered visual designs for the Reporting and Analytics Capability and the Measurement Definitions and Decision-Support Package, covering the Reporting, Analytics, and AI/ML deliverables.

Using human-centered design methods on visualizations, navigation, and decision-support screens, you will help people adopt these tools and understand them, while meeting Section 508, WCAG 2.1 AA, and federal digital service standards for accessibility, performance, and security.

Job family: Software Engineering. Requisition type: Regular. No clearance is required, now or to be obtained. No public trust requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Design dashboards, self-service reporting interfaces, and predictive analytics screens for the CMM Reporting and Analytics Capability using HCD and usability best practices.
  • Turn UX research, personas, and journey maps into high-fidelity prototypes, wireframes, and interface specifications for developers.
  • Work with BI architects, data engineers, product owners, and developers so visual designs match data models, KPIs, and reporting requirements.
  • Run usability tests, including heuristic evaluations, card sorting, and A/B testing, on dashboards and visualizations, and refine designs every sprint based on the results.
  • Define and maintain standards for visualization, navigation, and interaction so reports and dashboards stay consistent, easy to interpret, and easy to adopt.
  • Design the experience for the Measurement Definitions and Decision-Support Package so metrics and KPIs are clear enough to act on.
  • Check reporting and analytics interfaces against Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA.
  • Support fast prototyping and repeated validation of dashboard and reporting designs within Agile sprints.
  • Align navigation and visual hierarchy with Judiciary user workflows to drive adoption of dashboards and reporting tools.
  • Contribute standard UI components and templates to the shared CMM design system for reuse across reporting products.
  • Design explainable interfaces for AI/ML predictive analytics and decision-support features so end users can interpret model outputs.
  • Present AI/ML model outputs, confidence indicators, and recommendations using HCD principles to support responsible AI adoption.
  • Work with AI/ML and data science teams to turn model capabilities into user workflows that meet federal responsible-AI requirements for transparency, fairness, and risk mitigation.
  • Run usability evaluations of AI/ML interfaces and apply the feedback in iterative design updates.

Requirements

  • Experience in user experience (UX), UX design, and user interfaces (UI).
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or MA/MS degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Design, or a related field, with 10+ years of general information systems experience, 8+ years of specialized UI/UX design experience, and 5+ years in an HCD role supporting enterprise or government applications.
  • Alternatively, experience may replace the degree: 16+ years for HS, 14+ years for AA/AS, 12+ years for BA/BS, and 9+ years for a Doctorate or Ph.D.
  • Expertise in usability testing methods such as heuristic evaluations, card sorting, and A/B testing, plus skill with design and prototyping tools such as Figma, Sketch, Axure, Storybook, or similar.
  • Solid understanding of Agile/SAFe delivery, iterative design work, and DesignOps and UX governance practices.
  • Working knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, and responsive UI behavior to collaborate with front-end developers.
  • Experience designing federal systems with practical knowledge of Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA.
  • Strong oral and written presentation and communication skills.
  • A consultant mindset, with the ability to work with senior customer stakeholders and build strong relationships.
  • Experience finding and applying industry tools, methods, best practices, and emerging technologies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to form and communicate improvement recommendations.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Preferred: Certified Usability Analyst (CUA) or Certified HCD Professional.
  • Preferred: SAFe Agile Practitioner (SPC or SSM).
  • Preferred: Section 508 Trusted Tester certification.
  • Preferred: UX Design or HCD certification from NN/g, IDEO, or HFI.
  • Experience: 10+ years of related experience. Certifications: none required.
