The company is an engineering firm with more than 3,000 people across North America, serving clients in aerospace, medical devices, robotics, automotive, commercial vehicles, EVs, rail and other sectors.

It is part of a global engineering group of over 57,000 engineers in 30 countries, covering product development from consulting through full project outsourcing.

The team is looking for a Technical Specialist in functional safety to work on automotive systems, including autonomous driving, where safety requirements and architecture decisions have to hold up at the OEM or Tier 1 level.

You would work on hard engineering problems with little day-to-day oversight, in a collaborative group that moves quickly and keeps changing.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the writing of functional safety system requirements and break down the functional structure of automotive systems.
  • Review and approve the hazard analysis and risk assessment, functional safety requirements, technical safety requirements and validation tests.
  • Lead the creation of SOTIF requirements for autonomous driving and core subsystems.
  • Define the functional safety concept for the system, hardware and software under ISO 26262.
  • Help set and confirm the vehicle architecture from a functional safety standpoint.
  • Review and approve the Development Interface Agreement and other functional safety documents for suppliers and external partners.
  • Define functional safety interfaces with internal teams and suppliers.
  • Work with hardware, software, design and validation engineers to make sure the design meets its safety requirements.
  • Lead the development of functional safety processes and tools, and oversee the program's functional safety readiness process and metrics.
  • Work with cross-functional teams on hazard analysis and the safety concept.
  • Support functional safety validation tests.
  • Contribute to management decisions at several levels, using your systems knowledge to write detailed requirements.

Requirements

  • Deep working knowledge of ISO 26262 and a record of producing and delivering the main work products of a functional safety program.
  • At least one year of hands-on SOTIF analysis and the related work products.
  • A track record of successful outcomes, such as managing functional safety analyses that made a system or product safer.
  • Experience supporting external or third-party reviews of functional safety work products.
  • An understanding of how product safety responsibility is split between supplier and OEM, and the ability to explain technical issues and solutions to people at every level of the business.
  • Experience with functional safety tools such as Medini or APIS IQ, and requirements management tools such as Jama.
  • A strong drive to champion safety across hardware and software development.
  • Strong written, verbal and organizational skills.
  • A bachelor's degree at minimum in an engineering discipline such as computer science, electrical, electronic or mechatronics engineering.
  • At least 8 years of work experience as a functional safety engineer or in a closely related role.
  • Advantageous: experience working in an Agile development environment and with related tools.
  • Advantageous: knowledge of CMMI and Automotive SPICE and how they support a quality product.
  • Advantageous: experience developing and delivering embedded system hardware or software.
  • Preferred: an advanced degree.
