Description

The team is hiring a systems engineer focused on AFSIM, the Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration, and Modeling.

The work supports the National Air and Space Intelligence Center (NASIC) and/or the National Space Intelligence Center (NSIC).

You would help modeling and simulation analysis teams judge how military systems that exist now and those still in development perform across space, counter-space, and intelligence missions.

The role may be filled at level 2 or level 3, depending on the qualifications you bring.

Responsibilities

  • Build, connect, and maintain models and simulations inside AFSIM to support analysis at the mission level.
  • Create AFSIM scenarios and plugins, including object detection and identification and the behavior of systems of systems.
  • Work with modeling and simulation engineers, software developers, analysts, and government and DoD stakeholders to clarify mission goals and analysis needs.
  • Turn requirements into simulation architectures and models, then validate the models and document the results.
  • Write Python and C++ code, and use related languages, to extend AFSIM and connect it to outside tools, data sources, and visualization software.
  • Help write technical material such as intelligence-based reports, model documentation, and design descriptions that state assumptions, limits, and results clearly.
  • Join an Agile development team, using Jira to plan work, track progress, and release capability in steps.
  • Help improve the modeling and simulation environment by applying lessons learned, new capabilities, and customer feedback.
  • Explain technical findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Requirements

  • Level 2: a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related STEM field plus 2+ years of relevant experience, or a master's degree in a related STEM field with 0 years of relevant experience.
  • Level 3: a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related STEM field plus 5+ years of relevant experience, or a master's degree in a related STEM field plus 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • U.S. citizenship and an active TS/SCI security clearance, with the ability to keep it.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with AFSIM as a user or developer.
  • Experience with object-oriented programming, for example in C++ or Python.
  • Experience working in a team on software or modeling projects.
  • Strong written and spoken communication, including the ability to help produce complex technical documents.
  • Ability to work independently and with others in a setting where priorities shift quickly.
  • Preferred: AFSIM developers are favored, and experienced users willing to move into development are also desirable.
  • Preferred: hands-on AFSIM development, such as building scenarios, writing plugins, or extending the framework.
  • Preferred: experience with AFSIM version 2505 or later, where that applies to your program.
  • Preferred: experience with Jira and Agile development methods.
  • Preferred: experience with other modeling and simulation environments, such as Ansys Systems Tool Kit (STK), NGTS, or ITASE.
  • Preferred: additional programming experience, for example in Python, C++, MATLAB, SQL, or Java.
  • Preferred: prior intelligence community or domain experience, such as work with NASIC, NSIC, TMAP models, or intelligence-based modeling.
  • Preferred: familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) concepts and tools.
  • Preferred: experience mentoring and supporting junior engineers.
