Staff Software Engineer - Onboarding and Migrations

The Program Experience team is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to help grow the customer migration platform at the company.

The team wants an experienced, strong engineer who has built backend applications and data pipelines from the ground up.

The company runs a card issuing platform that lets businesses issue cards, authorize transactions and manage payment operations in real time.

This is an existing open role.

Responsibilities

• Build and support server-side applications and services in Java and Python.
• Create robust, scalable APIs, web services and microservices for front-end applications and user interactions.
• Build cloud-native applications on AWS (preferred) or another cloud platform, designed to scale and perform for end users.
• Tune code and databases for speed, growth and ease of maintenance.
• Find and fix technical problems and bottlenecks in backend systems.
• Build and manage data pipelines, ELT processes and data integration to serve analytics and reporting.
• Handle large structured and unstructured datasets, and design how data is stored and retrieved.
• Work with data scientists and analysts to keep data accurate, high quality and available for business decisions.
• Apply data security and privacy practices that protect sensitive information.
• Set up CI/CD pipelines that follow existing frameworks and automate deployments for smooth releases.
• Watch production systems, troubleshoot issues and keep them highly available and performant.
• Take part in on-call rotations and incident response when needed.
• Write and maintain thorough documentation for code, architecture and data processes.
• Work with product managers, domain experts and other cross-functional teams to ship high-quality software.
• Mentor junior engineers on their short and long term growth and improve engineering efficiency across the organization.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering or a related field. A master's degree is a plus.
• At least 8 years of software engineering experience, including data pipelines, data integration and database management.
• Deep knowledge of AWS services such as S3, Glue, Athena, DynamoDB and Kinesis.
• Hands-on experience with data integration tools such as Fivetran.
• Hands-on experience with orchestration services such as Airflow.
• Working knowledge of modern databases, both relational, non-relational and data warehouses such as Amazon Aurora, Cassandra, DynamoDB and Snowflake.
• Solid programming skills in a modern language such as Python, Java or Scala.
• Understanding of data modeling, ELT processes and data warehousing concepts.
• Hands-on experience building and running containerized workloads and services, such as Kubernetes, in the cloud.
• Familiarity with data quality and data governance principles.
• Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Able to take an abstract problem and lead the team through design, build, deployment and operations.
• Clear communication with cross-functional teams and the ability to explain technical ideas to non-technical stakeholders.
• Comfortable with distributed teams, self-directed and proactive in communication.
• Able to mentor junior engineers and champion software engineering principles and best practices across the organization.
• Use AI tools effectively and responsibly to speed up design, development and operations. This includes reviewing and validating AI output, protecting sensitive data and customer information, and following company security, privacy and compliance guidelines.
• AWS or other relevant certifications are a plus.

Conditions

This is a full-time role that can be performed remotely within Ontario or British Columbia, Canada.

Pay is set by work location, skills, prior experience and other factors. The new-hire base salary range, in CAD, is 156,800 to 196,000.
