Staff Machine Learning and Bioinformatics Scientist (Multi-Cancer Early Detection)

Description

The company is building tests that detect many cancers from one blood draw, and this role helps design the models behind them.

You will work with large, multi-modal genomic datasets from clinical cohorts and work closely with molecular biologists and clinical scientists.

Your research moves from prototype to scalable implementation, then clinical validation, and finally to patients.

The team is a research group made up of statisticians, geneticists, physicians, laboratory scientists, business staff and software engineers.

Responsibilities

• Lead development of new statistical and machine learning methods for detecting cancer signals in multi-modal genomic data.
• Build models that are interpretable and well calibrated, and set the group's standard for uncertainty estimation and reproducibility.
• Prototype, test and put machine learning models into production on scalable infrastructure.
• Own key technical deliverables within larger projects and help shape the research roadmap.
• Design and analyse experiments and validation studies together with molecular biologists and clinical experts.
• Raise technical quality through code and design reviews across projects.
• Explain complex results clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Mentor junior scientists and help build a culture of curiosity, collaboration and scientific excellence.

Requirements

• PhD in computer science, mathematics, bioinformatics or a related quantitative field, plus 6-12 years of experience after the PhD.
• Hands-on experience building novel statistical or machine learning methods for complex biological data.
• A proven record of innovation and technical leadership in complex method development.
• Expertise in deep learning and multimodal foundation models.
• Proficiency in Python and its scientific computing libraries.
• Commitment to scientific rigor throughout R&D, and willingness to teach and learn new computational methods and biology.
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach across teams.
• Preferred: familiarity with DNA methylation and other epigenomic data.
• Preferred: experience with cell-free DNA and liquid biopsy samples.
• Preferred: background in cancer genomics and diagnostics.
• Preferred: hands-on work with multimodal foundation models applied to biological data.

Conditions

Remote position in the USA with a base pay range of $163,200 to $204,000 USD.

Actual pay depends on factors such as skill set, years and depth of experience, certifications and specific office location, and may differ in other locations due to labor costs.
